.m2v to .avi Is it Possible?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but...
I've searched this forum and guides but couldn't find the answer:

I can encode to MPEG2 fine but is it possible to go from a .m2v back to a .avi

The reason being is that I have a .m2v and I want to edit some parts out (not just cutting things out but "blacking" things or parts of the scene out) If someone could just help me get to the avi then I can edit it no problem.

Sure you can compress a .m2v file to avi (divx, xvid or uncompressed)

You can use TMPG for it :

[File] --> [Output to file]
