View Full Version : Jumpy playback on authored movies

I've been trying to create a DVD of my own movies (from DV) and have gone through the entire process more or less without any problems. But whenever I compile the finished movie things start getting odd...
the movies and menus plays fine except when there's a lot of dark areas in the picture... for instance in the credits of movies.
One place I have a flying 3d logo on black background, and even that didn't work as it should.
What happens is the picture "hangs" and jumps for a while, and (depending on the player) stops completely.
This happens on my computer (same I used to burn) and some DVD players. Not all of them though.
I should add that this problem occurs after the authoring process. There's nothing wrong with the movie files before that.
And I get the same problem when playing the movie from the hdd. So it's not the way they're burned...
And also it doesn't seem to matter which authoring program I use. I've tried both Maestro and Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2, and both had the same result...

Any ideas?

I had the same problem before, then I switchd to Scenarist for muxing my movies together and I have not been unsatisfied yet. Just a suggestion.

Thanx, I'll check it out... I still hope someone knows why this happens though...

What u describe could very well be an adaptation of wrong field order for your player and computer.

Usually a wrong field order has the effect of a jumpy picture where there is fast motion on the screen and a horizontal panning of the camera. I have faced the problem a couple of times before realizing what caused it.

One other thing that leads me to this conclusion is the usage of DV material that is encoded 'bottom field first' instead of the 'top field first' that usually is the case.

So try to encode with this in mind. Especially if u r using CCE as your encoder check the 'Uppper field first' check box. This is not a typo error. CCE needs this check box to encode correctly a DV footage.

As an alternative to what oddyseus said, you can change the field order losslessly using pulldown.exe (and a couple of other apps). Just takes a couple of mins to process the mpeg2 stream.
