subtitles in VCD (MPEG-1)

Is there no way at all to 1) delete or to 2) edit subtitles in VCDs? Sometimes these subs are too big, in languages I don't understand, or hopelessly out of sync with the picture. Please advise.

VCDs do not support soft encoded subtitles like SVCDs or DVDs do. The subs in a VCD are hard encoded into the picture. They are just as much a part of the picture as the actors are. The only way to edit or remove them is to modify that part of the picture. You could crop that portion of the screen or try to use the logoaway filter to blur that portion of the screen, but the results will never be very good. Either live with the subs are look into using other formats.
