Hello all,

I have seen a couple of cases where the files I backup with DVD Shrink will claim to be not playable in this region when played back from hard drive with PowerDVD, but then when the same files are burned to DVD, it plays back fine in both my set top DVD player AND Power DVD. Any idea why this would be?

I noticed another thread about a utility to remove RCE checking from DVD Shrink stuff, but I wasn't sure if this should be posted there or not. Related, but I didn't think it was quite the same issue...

Thanks,
harry349

Did you check all the "Target DVD Regions" boxes (1-6) in the final DVD Shrink screen before transcoding?

I guess I should have explicitly specificied this in the original post, but yes.

Hi harry349,

It should be RCE problem. When you playback from HD, PowerDVD feed the system region info as region-free because you have checked all region, so RCE checking code fail. But when you burn it to dvd-r, PowerDVD feed the system region info as your DVD drive's current region setting, and your DVD drive's region setting is allowed by the RCE checking code, so the playback is permitted, the same with standalone DVD player.

You can try to use my free tool "IFO Region-Free" at http://www.dvdidle.com/IFORegionFree01.zip to process all the ifo files, then run PowerDVD to play the DVD on HD to see the result.
