View Full Version : vfw decompressor error in vdubmod

I'm using vdubmod 1.5.1.1a and koepi's xvid May-14-2003 build.

I just finished an encode and had the snazzy new trellis thingamajig checked (along with ultahigh, h.263, xvid, 4-wide search, chroma, q-pel and b-frames).

However I can't get the resulting avi to open in vdubmod. I get the vfw decompressor for xvid error. I re-installed the xvid executable from koepi's site (thanks for all the great builds, koepi!) and also tried removing the nic/ffdshow directshow filters but to no avail.

I can open it zoomplayer using ffdshow with 'use xvid' checked however.

Any help debugging this? Thanks guys.

This post has both the problem and the answer:

I was using avs2avi 1.27 and it's sort of borken with xvid.
Why I didn't see this when I was in my mad rush to get avs2avi is beyond me.

Maybe I need my brain re-aligned.

From what I understand the version I had my hands on was writing bad avi header information for xvid. However it played fine through directshow filters and gspot2.2 could see all the information fine.

My question is would it be possible to write a tool that can recreate or repair non-conforming header information for avi's?

I only ask because the output looked very nice, as most xvid encodes tend to, and since I was looking at almost 9 hours per pass it would certainly have been nice to be able to just rebuild the header as opposed to re-encoding the whole video.

Ok this MIGHT work
encode a single frame of the same resolution and open that in vdub append the file you want to use and then save using direct stream copy that should use the header from the first file.
Then open that file in vdub and remove the first frame and direct stream copy to a new file. :)

Very clever idea. Sadly I can't test it as the video I made was lost from this world in a tragic recycling accident. (i erased it).

Thanks for the help though. :)
