View Full Version : VCD (.dat) files and raw Mpeg1 files together on a CD-R. Is it possible?

I tried looking for info about this but had no luck. I can't imagine that I'm the only person that want's to try this. But....
Is it possible to create a CD-R with say, 50% of the disc having VCD (.dat) files etc and the other 50% having raw high res. Mpeg1 files.
The idea is to create a single disc that can 'easily' be recognised by both a stand alone DVD player and a PC.
I've tried using Nero and have had limited success. However although I am able to mix both types of data on the CD-R the .dat section does not run properly because it's not finalized.
It's a mad idea I know but has anyone had any success?

i remember reading an old thread saying that nero can automatic import *.dat files; if not, convert your *.dat -> *.mpeg using vcdgear.
you weren't to clear about how you burn it, but to watch a (s)vcd on a dvd player, it has to be burn as (s)vcd; but i don't have a dvd player, so i guessing.
not sure about the high resolution mpegs.

I am creating a 'show reel' CD-R for a friend of mine. He currently sends examples of his work, to prospective clients, on two CD-R's.
One VCD (.dat) disc, is for use with a DVD player.
And one high res. Mpeg1 disc, is for use with a PC.
Each CD-R contains the same 12 files and runs for less than 10 mins.
The VCD (.dat) disc contains around 75MB of data. And adopts the VCD std of 352x288, 25fps, 1150kbps + audio.
The Mpeg1 disc contains around 182MB of data. And has been encoded at 720x576, 25fps, 4000kbpsVBR + audio.
The idea is to create 1no CD-R that incorporates both types of files that can be played, easily on both a DVD player and PC.
Unfortunately, SVCD is no good because not all stand alone DVD players can read them and not all PC users have mpeg2 codecs installed in their PC's - Hence Mpeg1.
I suppose what I'm trying to find out is, whether it's possible to do this using non-commercial CD creation software.

Any VCD-capable software should be able to do what you are trying to achieve ... haven't tried it myself, but VCDEasy has the option ((S)VCD -> ISO Files), just add your hi-res video file there or put it in a separate folder. 8.3 names only.
Beware, though, some dvd standalones have a "smart navigation" menu which might kick in when it detects additional av files (usually only happens when no VCD content is avialable).

this might be the samething smiller667 just said, so anyway;
i have this vcd which has an extra folder in the vcd menu (ex. cdi, ext, mpegav) entitled "extra" with has some mpeg files (vcd complaint for some reason) in it, anyhow, just load you *.dat or standard complaint mpeg into nero (s)vcd and move your hi-res mpegs into a folder (call it extra if you want) and highlight it in (nero) file brower -> right click -> ctrl+1 and burn it.
since i never tried it, i don't know what's the outcome.

I wonder if either of you could give it ago, to see if the idea works, as you seem to know your way around the burning software better than I do.
Iv'e tried using as many different setting as I can find in Nero, but so far and no joy. It's a good job I'm using a CD-RW disc. I'm just a little worried that if I keep trying, because I don't know too much about CD burning software I could be doing just one stupid thing wrong and the disc won't work.

ok, i just tried burning it, and it worked (meaning the files are there), but since i don't have a dvd player and my friends dvd don't accept cd-rw, i can't be sure if it will work property.
forget ctrl+1, it's Copy to compilation

What a pisser!
Would it be too much to ask you to create a CD-R version and try it on your friends DVD player.
If you have managed to create a disc that works on both a DVD player and a PC this would be great.
At last, a multi standard Mpeg1 CD!

you should have put a question mark at the end of that sentence, it kind of seems a little demanding; i played the RW at my neighhor's house (annoying) and it worked, accept for the corrupt video of the 1st second of video, probably causes the RW was scratch.
the time it took me to reply, you could have tested it yourself

I'm sorry my friend but as I said I don't know too much indepth stuff about CD burning software.
I'm glad it works though!
But............................................. In the end, how exactly did you do it?
Thanks again.

#1 open-up Nero, choose vcd in it's menu
#2 drag your *.dat or *.mpeg into the vcd menu
#3 put all your hi-res mpeg into one folder (name it extra, or whatever)
#4 in File Browser, click on the folder where your hi-res mpegs are, right-click, copy to compilation (that would have just added that folder to your vcd menu.
#5 File -> Compilation Info -> Label -> Volume Label and give it name
#6 File -> Write CD
#7 play in your DVD player to see if you worked.

Hello again,
I did as instructed and I am happy to say the disc does work on both a DVD player and a PC.
However, the PC is not actually playing the mpeg files stored in the folder. For some reason the WinMedia player is now able to recognise and play back the ordinary .dat files (after a bit of a pause). With the first file stammering a bit at the begining.
I wondered what would happen if just an empty folder was copied to the compilation. But the disc just fired up the way a normal VCD would in a PC.
I also tried copying raw Mpeg1 files to the copilation individually (not in a folder) but this crashed Nero. So that was no good!
So, it's nearly there but not quite.
Any other ideas

What happens if you're dumb and not smart?

i will try to guess what you are trying to do, you are able to achieve playback on your dvd and pc, but not able to playback the hi-res mpeg, (i'm i right), those hi-res mpegs are data, they can't be played like a vcd, you have to goto the folder in your vcd where your hi-res mpeg are, and play them (double-click) like a normal file on your computer.
being dumb is the same as not being smart, playing dumb is not the same as being dumb, acting smart is not the same as being smart, cause acting smart will just make you a jackass for making some else look dumb.

Yes, I was hoping that when the disc was inserted into a PC, you would be greeted with the familiar list of VCD folders (MPEGAV, VCD ets) including the new 'hi-res' folder.
It seems a bit odd that after adding the new 'hi-res' folder, the WinMedia Player self starts.
I think you've just found a new way of getting VCD's (with .dat files) to play really easy on a PC. So that's good news anyway!
Hey, how about this one...............

I've just taken notic what's written below your name.
Are you anything to do with the company ADS that makes the analogue to digital capturing devices.
Fred Thompson recommended the device to me but I can't seem to find one over here in England!
Cheers

all my quotes are about me, so i just can't put anything i want.
that little thing is so simple, that if you try to guess what it stands for, you will probably never figure it out.

So, do you have any idea's as to why the .dat files auto run. I cant understand it myself?

a *.dat file is just another form of a mpeg, when your burn a vcd complaint mpeg, the mpeg turn into a *.dat file; they automatic start playing the same reason why a dvd plays, cause they have to.
