weird fragmentation problem while ripping

Well, I will try to explain clearly my problem :-)

I have 2 SATA 80GB stripped (raid 0) disks partitionned as follow under WinXP :
25GB => Windows
130GB => few data and rip space

I'm using the 130GB partition to rip my DVDs before re-enconding. This partition is, before ripping, totally defragmented (120GB space left).

Ripping a 300MB vob with Smartripper create a 640 fragments file !!

How do you explain that ?

By the way, I've tried to copy a 1GB file from an second drive to this partition and this file is copied without producing any fragment.
I've also tried to rip on a separate non stripped defragmented drive and the ripped file is 9 fragments

Can anybody help ?

Try using DVDDecryptor first. That could solve the problem. It's not like this matters for encoding where the the read/write rate is critical, like DV capture.

worse results using DVDDecrypter : 5960 fragments on a full defragmented HD !

I'm wondering if software like ripper which - in a way - streams data on disk doesn't "naturally" produce fragmented file.

Has anybody ever check a rip to see if it is fragmented or not ?

I see that you demux the ac3 file during the decrypting. Couldn't that be it? I mean it has to write to separate files at the same time (well perhaps not), this should be able to fragment a drive, no?

My rips are never fragmented, and I also demux the AC3 during ripping. I use DVD-Decryptor.

Maybe try making a smaller partition for ripping. You only need 10GB max per movie (including final files). Also, make sure things like 'Indexing Service', 'System Restore' and the like are turned off on the partition for ripping.
