View Full Version : Nic's PP as default for MPEG-4?

Hello,

current c't magazine's issue (10/2003) states that for playback of XviD-encoded material Nic's PostProcessing was used. From what I've understood Doom9's latest codec comparison used the same PP (for XvID), as most users of XviD-encoded movies probably do, too.

So I'm wondering: Does anyone know what kind of PP DVD/MPEG-4 players out there use for playback of DivX/XviD-encoded movies? Does Nic's PP comply with any "standard" for MPEG-4 playback? Are there any talks with player manufacturers to incorporate the same PP into hardware so users get the same "quality" when played back through a standalone player as compared to the display on a computer?

@Doom9:
Thanks for your great comparison. I'm wondering: will you ever conduct a codec comparison judging from the output on a TV set?

The PP used in mine is an optimised version of the post-processing functions from the MPEG-4 Reference Software.

However, post-processing is done after the decoding so doesn't have to conform to any sort of specification. I would assume that hardware manufacturers would include Post-Processing, but they might not due to budgeting/time reasons etc.

Hope that helps, :)

Thanks for the answer :)

So that implies that chances are there that people will be able to watch postprocessed movies on hardware players in the same quality as seen on software players using your PP, because hardware manufacturers could just use reference implementations for PP ... ?

You've got some cheek to ask me questions after that post, and now because you created an account even after suspension, your permanantly banned.
