Hi - I've been battling this all weekend - and I have to have it done by tomorrow morning. I need to extract some short clips from a DVD or from a VOB and make it into an AVI file. I have about 8 minutes of video which I need to extract, and I have 700MB to use for it. So, pretty much any quality will work. But I have to make an AVI file. So, any suggestions as to a simple as possible method of doing this? Thanks so much!

This guide should tell you what you have to do for a DVD to avi conversion.

This thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47445 outlines how you can go about splitting scenes from you VOB files, so that will get you a VOB of your desired scene.
Then once that is done I would think you could just use the Gordian Knot guide (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm) to convert your 8 minute VOB into an AVI.

you could also use DVD2AVI to select the part you want to encode and then save a project of the selection.
then just use gordianknot to make an avi file.

here's how i'd do this:
rip vob files
dvd2avi project...
load into gknot to creat avs file
load avs file into virtualdubmod
trim in virtualdubmod
encode in vdubmod
concerning the "urgent: ... - please please help!" thingie: please read this thread:
