Doom9's codec comparison, Pfff~

It's pretty dumb that all the talks are about which codec looks
better, which has less mosquito noise, which looks sharper.
Does doom9 think it's a beauty pageant?

It's Not about the comparison between the codecs.
but the comparison between the input and the output.

How hard is that to include the source screenshot so that people
can determine which codec looks closest to the original.

How hard is that to include the source screenshot so that people can determine which codec looks closest to the original. As a sidenote, the source frame IS included in the comparison. Jeesh, at least make sure your point is valid. (Excuse me moderators.) "dumbass"

And if you don't like it, go make your own. You're supposed to compare codecs on your own anyway, comparisons simply tell you where to start testing.

I'd beg to differ there. The ENTIRE point of compressing, tweaking settings, and recompressing our movies is to make them look as good as they possibly can be. If we didn't care about quality in the picture, what does it matter what codec we use then. All of them can fit a movie into a given space if the bitrate is low enough. ;)

If the input is exactly the same isn't the differences between the outputs what we are looking for then? To see how the different codecs handle different situations?

If think that there is something wrong with the comparision, or somewhere that it could be better, then post a suggesion. The people here (mods and Doom9 especially) are open-minded to suggestions as long as you as polite about it. You don't have to start flamewars to get your thoughts out!

If you think that the comparision is amaturish, tell why. Or better yet make your own! I can guarantee that if you put together, and post the results of any codec comparision that you will get at least 10 posts of people thanking you for it. But if you can put together a comparision that is better then Doom9's, I guarantee you will have at least 100 posts praising you.

Doom9's comparisions are the best I've ever seen and are very well done. And it is sad that everytime he makes one, many of these useless 'put-down' threads are made. I've already responed to two other threads about this one.

I and very greatfull that Doom9 makes these comparisions. They are very helpful for the hundreds (probably thousands) of people who read it.

I would only change two things about the review.

1. Have that fancy mouse-over feature that has the picture change from one to the other in the same spot. Doom9 already mentioned that he wanted to do this, so its not a big deal.

2. Offer all of the original screen captures in a single RAR/ZIP for download through BitTorrent. The extra bandwidth would kill Doom9 if they tried to host it themselves, but if they used BitTorrent for distribution, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Aside from those two items, it was excellent.

There is something else I was wondering about when reading the review. What about compression on ultra-clean sources. Like a movie filmed completely digitally, ala StarWars 2, or a 3D rendered scene, ala Toy Story or custom scene? Would it make enough of a difference to warrant the extra time and information?
