What has your team done to hack (and the divx team) to make both of your codecs different from the original? How are they better? Are they in any way worse?

None of those codecs are hacks. All of them are seperate implementations of the mpeg-4 standard. You are probably thinking of Divx3. Which is a hacked version of Microsoft's mpeg-4v2 codec. The best why to see the differences between them it to take a look at the codec comparision, or use a sample clip and test the codecs yourself.
