What FourCC do you use?

I recently 'switched' over to XviD (not completely) since I've done a encode of *** ******** and I must say I was VERY impressed by the detail which remained with XviD. But now I am encoding *********, and I did an XviD encode as well as a DivX 5.05 encode, and when playing on tv or monitor, DivX just looks better (yes I do use FFDshow for XviD, and tried every possible setting). I tried the scene where Gandalf falls down with the firemonster (in the beginning) and Xvid looks bad while playing. But when I compared the both in VirtualDubMod, XviD was better, so I changed the XviD FourCC code to XviD and let the DivX decoder handle it, and it looked superb!

So I was wondering how many people actually encode in XviD and use the DivX decoder, because the deblocking and deringing of the DivX decoder looks way better to me.
What other options are there for me?

Edit: My bad, on the monitor it looks as bad as divx, too blurry. On tv its good tho.

i do. most of the time i encode with xvid and use DX50 fourcc .. but when watching .. i always turn off the post-processing settings and still look good.

I never use postprocessing, so I didn't noticed that Effect. My TV is enough postprocessing for me :p

Means exactly that, he doesnt need to be linking, asking, etc. for it to break rule 6. Mentioning is enough.

Do you mean you changed it to DivX ?

If you tried in VirtualDubMod then the dshow filter probably wasn't used. This means its probably not the filter, but the colorspace.

Try my colorspacetest app, to see what colorspaces are being outputted when using DivX FourCC and the XviD FourCC.

@Nic: I downloaded your colorspace tester just to try it, and the first file I open always uses YV12, then any files from then on use YUY2. Is this normal?

I'm using the latest ffdshow alpha to decode all of these files.

Nic, this same thing happens on my computer with Geforce3. Is it possible for your decoder to default to YUY2 (with a checkbox) or should I go with ffdshow "use xvid decode" route since it has the colorspace checkboxes already? Thanks

i think its normal when the first avi opened is reported to be in YV12 and any avi opened after that at the same time are YUY2 ... i think many graphic card cant do multiple YV12 at once ...

I did a couple tests and playing the files in WMP, the colorspace is always YV12, so I've got nothing to worry about. Thanks for the help. :D
