so he cut his arm off with his penknife :eek:

he tried at 1st but couldn't break the skin so he snapped the bones in his arms

WOW, I've just broke my thumbtip and was crying like a new born baby but doing something like that is UNREAL

brings back the old debate about how far you would go to survive

bit like that film 'Alive' where the Uruguayan rubgy team ate the dead :(

Yeh I saw that on the news a couple of days ago. What a legend!!! I still can't see how he managed to do it without passing out!

I remember last time I broke my arm, I just felt like throwing up everytime it got bumped :(

As far fetched as it seems he was trapped for 5 days without food or water, you really need to think 5 days is a long time esp without water. In the Texas heat I'd been cutting come the 3rd day, bec the ants or the buzzards would surely be interested in yah by then. haha

A farmer did it a few years ago in the uk, his hand had been dragged into a haybailer, so he had to cut it of or he was foolowing it in.

When I hear stories like this I wonder if I would even get into a situation like that. I'm surrounded by mountains here, and we hike them a lot. But never alone, and we both carry cell phones. There are just too many things that can go wrong, rock slides among them, but more likely lost footing, twisted ankles (also animal attacks, like rattlesnake, falcon, and my favorite - skunk).

However, there was one morning I was tempted to gnaw off my arm ... (anyone familiar with the term "cayote ugly", and I don't mean the movie.

People don't know what they're capable of when they're very desperate. Some people would have just chosen to die, some would choose to cut off their arm. And, it was probably an easier choice than you imagine. With an 800# boulder sitting on the end of your arm for a number of days, it would probably be little more than a flab of dead flesh.

Wmansir, the kid's dad should have been shot too, for having a baby by that woman.

You can't imagine it, but that doesn't mean you couldn't do it in the same circumstances. As a silly little version of that kind of thing - while sitting here at the PC, little aches & pains annoy me. But in a sparring match, much greater pain (on an objective scale) goes unnoticed. We had a 14 yr old kid break his arm in a match a couple weeks back. He didn't even know it was broken until we pointed out the angle of his lower arm. Radius & ulna both snapped; it needed a steel plate and several screws.

Back to the bigger stuff - many military badasses can't drop the hammer on the enemy when it comes down to it, while some timid moms beat hell out of intruders in defense of their home & kids.

The human psyche is a strange thing...
