could someone help a newbie to put avi movie onto a cdr

i am not sure how to put a movie onto a cdr or what software to use please could someone help

Simply burn it as a data disc onto a cd-r ... any CD-R soft will do, just choose data disc (ISO9660). Joliet extensions will provide you with long filename support etc ...
Such a disc will be playable on your PC (provided you have the appropriate codecs installed) and on the handful of divx-capable DVD players (provided the avi is in one of the supported formats).
If you want to produce a VCD or SVCD (which can be played back on a lot of DVD players), try one of the doom9 guides to convert from avi to VCD or SVCD.
