Hi,
I'm trying to backup Dr. Zhivago (PAL), the movie comes in a double sided disk, the first side is a double layer (DVD9) and the other side is single layer (DVD5) (this is the first time I saw this kind of disk). Anyway, I wanted to backup the movie on one disk (DVD5) and also keep all the menu (I hope CCE can do this for me). Can anybody show me a way to do this or point me to a guide that I can follow?
I did tried to follow Derrow's guide a while back on a similar DVD, but without success.

Thanks.

this guide: http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/joinclip.html will show how to take a dual sided dvd-5 (flipper) and put it all on one dvdr!

You'll only have the menu for the first side, but I don't know how you could expect any more :D

Eyes` Only,
Thanks very much, I really appreciated, and sorry about posting in the wrong thread before.

Eyes` Only,
I tried to follow the guide that you pointed me too, It was the same guide that I used a while back and could not get it to work. I have a couple of questions:
- Do you re-encode the movie first and then use vobedit to merge them later? or it does not matter which way you do first?
- If I do the merging first and then CCE, then would the merging work if I have more a total of more than 10 vob files for a single title set?
My problem is the total of the vob files from side A and side B are 11 altogether.

I merged then re-encoded, i believe. Otherwise guessing the bitrate would be tough.

What's the problem with 11 .vobs?

I thought the maximum vobs allows for any title set is 10 including the menu vob? am I right? So you think there should not be any problem with 11 vobs?

Hmm good point. You may have to use use ifoedit (just go normally like you would to remove say, a German audio stream) but before you start the stripping procedure change the vob split size to 'no split'. That should give you one .vob file which you can append to the first side.

Ingenuity is a must in this game :D

Is there any way to keep an active menu from side 2?

I am trying to backup a flipper that has a menu on both sides. I want to use the guide you suggested earlier in this thread to join the 2 sides, then use dvd shrink to make it fit on one DVD. Do you think I can reauthor the menu to have 2 pages, then redirect each link on the second menu page to the new VOB names (created from side 2)?

If you are a dvdshrink user, I'm doubting you have the knowledge to do this as it requires rebuilding both menus from scratch, but yes it could be done.

 What is that supposed to mean? ;) Two weeks ago, I didn't even know I could backup DVDs at all. Thanks to forums like this and people like you, I've come a long way in a short time. All I need is a guide and some direction if I get stuck.

It sounds like the process isn't as easy as simply remapping the buttons on the original menus or creating a new menu with 2 choices (selecting the original side 1 or side 2 menu). I found the Spruce DVDMaestro guide on Doom9.net (which seems to list you as a contributor). If I follow this guide, should I be able to do it? Or is there an easier way?

PS--I only use DVDShrink because it's easy, :sly:

you are going to have to demux each menu down to it's bare components (video/audio/subtitles) then recreate them from scratch in either Maestro or Scenarist.

Before you attempt to do this, I think you should learn the DoItFast tools so you understand demuxing and everything. This is no easy task. Many have tried to jump right into recreating a menu (creating one is easy, recreating one using someone else's work is a lot more difficult!), or use 2 original menus from 2 DVDs (we have a user in #doom9 that has been attempting to figure this out for about a year now).

ive successfully recreated the menus in the r4 Gone In 60 Seconds and r4 The Hard Word, both of which were originally created in DVDMaestro, which made it a little easier, and currently im making the LOTR SEE 2 disc's of movies into 1 DVDR, with full chapter menus, which is coming along nicely, and is actually not that bad once you know your way around DVDMaestro a lot ;)

recreating someone else's complete dvd structure using the same application in which they authored it originally is probably the best way to get to know a particular authoring software. DVD originally authored with DVDMaestro are easy to confirm, the VIDEO_TS.VOB has one frame that says Spruce Technologies, and there is usually a large number of VTS', all Single PGC. finding a DVD that was originally authored in Scenarist to completely recreate in Scenarist again is a bit harder, but probably not impossible, you just need to work out something that Scenarist does that is 'unique'.

hmm auenf I would like to know more about how you are creating teh menu for LOTR...I have the latest LOTR2 , which came in two discs....I guess it was a retail version (not out yet promo retail)...which has been split into 2 dics using ifoedit. Now the question is how would you go about it to bring it all back to one DVd and the re-encode it ..but also keep the original menu. I am afraid since i do not have the retail promo i do not have a clue of which menu would have to be used from what disc...anyways ...hope you might have some ideas????
