I have a PAL DVD rip of Mad Max and I think it's interlaced.

I have read the sticky FAQ in IVTC and interlacing and stuff and this seems to be the relevant section for me;

"THE BAD: INTERLACED DVDs. As with NTSC interlace, the only thing to do is to run some form of de-interlacer, like FieldDeinterlace or GreedyHMA. These are quite common, as there is more stuff made for TV that is shot directly on video in Europe, even some quite high-class productions are shot directly on video and are therefore 50fps interlaced."

How do I add the FieldDeinterlace or GreedyHMA to my GordionKnot session? I have no idea. I presume it involes downloading something else for AVISYNTH and then mucking about with the AVS script, but I have no idea what!..

Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope.

It's much easier than that: When you have pressed the save&encode button in the preview window, you get a list of suggestions, where for instance you can choose resizing method. Here you also find a 'Edit' button. Press that. Find the line that says #Deinterlacing. In this section you'll find all deinterlacing methods available. Remove the #-sign from the line which has the deinterlacer you want to use. Then save the .avs and proceed as usual.

And I'll chime in with more advice ... You don't have to encode and wait for hours to see the results. After editing, but before saving ... use the Preview button. The .avs script will be opened by Windows Media Player 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) and act as an uncompressed, silent .avi.

I sometimes use the "File...Save" option from that player to save a test .avs for opening in VdubMod. I do this to more easily do frame-by-frame analysis. Also, I'll usually put a "#" in front of the resizing filter if I'm looking for interlacing or other artifacts -- it helps to reduce squinting.

You can make many tests this way, in a very short period of time.
