is there such thing as lossless compression?

I've heard of DVD shrink. It works by reducing quality. Is there such a thing that will compress DVDs w/out any loss in quality. (I don't care if they don't play on stand-alone dvd players)

p.s. sorry if this is a stupid question. Ive been burning DVD's for a while but I've been spliting them into 2 discs when necessary, avoiding the whole compression thing. I don't know much about it.

basically, there isnt a way to lossless compress a DVD. Lossless AVI codecs do exist (eg, HUFFYUV, LMJPEG), but they will make a DVD a lot bigger than they are on the disc.
