View Full Version : AviSynth/VDubMod related big crash
I am using GordianKnot freshly installed on a
freshly installed XP and GK crashes systematically when
doing the first pass, under VDubMod : i get this msgbox :
Title : VirtualDubMod Error
"AviSynth read error."
"Avisynth caught an access violation at <address1>, attempting to read from <address2>
I insist, i do NOT use a particular version of
AviSynth, i've just installed the RipPack0.28setup2.1, and i
compress a movie just like I used to do with 0.27.
I'm speaking of 0.28setup2.1 but it is the same thing since the firsts 0.28alphas
As you can see in the BugTracker post, len0x suggested it came from a divx bug affecting >5.02 but i've tried several Avisynth/DivX combinations, and nothing works, from DivX5.02 to 5.05 and with all available versions of avisynth (2.5.0, 2.5.1, VDubMod2.5.1)
And if you need more infos, logs etc, i can provide them.
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem and thought it was memory or HD corruption.
I think it's virtualDubMod(with .28.1). Latest version of VirtualDub ran everything fine.
nop.
neither VirtualDubMod 1.4.13.2v2 nor 1.5.11a works.
furthermore, i have some other problems with 1.5.11a...
Some systems have it (I have one when it was constantly happening).
Some doesn't... We had the same bug report a while ago...
I believe it's rather avisynth issue.
Soon we'll provide downgrade update for GK with Avisynth 2.0.8 to see if this is still happenning...

Are you referring to:
Q1.22: My computer seems to crash at random during a second pass in any encoder ?
It doesn't seem the case, coz for me it's only first pass of divx5 (xvid, divx3 are ok...)
Wilbert

Yes, that's what I meant. Maybe it can also happen during the first pass. I also had this problem (well XviD worked fine, but DivX5 always crashed, when doing large projects). All those crashes disappeared when lowering the bus speed to 125 MHz.

Was the PC overclocked originally ?
Im my case it's very old (P3 600) laptop, which has this behaviour...
Luckily my main programming PC is unaffected :)

Was the PC overclocked originally ?
No. It is an Athlon
mine isn't overclocked.
athlon tbird 1333mhz
A patch with avs 2.0.8 + filters is available to download for those who have crashes with 2.5.x. You can try it and report if you still have the same problems...
same error with xvid.
i thought it was a divx-exculsive issue ?!?
anyway, going to try avisynth 2.0.8
yes !
it works fine.
chicken run ;) well done in divx5.05
many many thanks for this len0x.
but in order to really fix it, maybe should we contact avisynth developers ?

Well, it can be hardware/OS issue, but can be avisynth as well...
My guess it'll be quite difficult to fix unless developers over there can reproduce the problem on their systems...
P.S. this should definitely go the FAQ section though :)

Tried again with 2.08 + patch ( running xvid)..
It rebooted on the 2nd pass when I tried to turn off Winamp 2.91. Other times it rebooting on it's own.
I NEED to do more testing. with and without gknot, virtualdubmod, avisynth 2.51 and 2.08, -,+ all xvid options etc...
I will also try some more jobs with VirtualDub 1.52 as it did one 2 pass movie no problems using avisynth 2.51 and xvid(same options as job above).
I'm also not sure it's my computer. Still I ran memtest 86, diskscans etc, prime95(24hrs+)...No problems.
I haven't gotten a mem access error in awhile. Just random reboots.
Wilbert

First, try the latest binaries of AviSynth v2.51. My guess is the following:
1) It happens with v2.51 and not with v2.08.
2) It happens with DivX5 and not with XviD. (Guess, this one is false.)
Try to lower the bus speed from 133 MHz to 125 MHz and report back.

sounds like memory problems to me...
try checking it first...
I have tried the patch, and with 14mins left to go on the frist pass, I still get the error. I never got this error before untill updateing the software. now I can't seem to get rid of it.

That's what I thought it was too. Prime95 and memtest 85 ran fine for over a day so I'm starting to think it's not memory related. I'm still in the process of testing my system and encoding software...so I'll tell you how things are going next week.
I think its a software error, and not a memory/hardware error. I have no memory leaks, nor do i have a bad memory stick. For me useing either one of these updates it causes an error. Maybe for normal Hollywood dvd's you might not get this error, but I have noticed with older dvd's lets say Dragonball Z the ones that Pioneer put out. It errors out left and right. The ones I have used it with was newer dvd's and i didn't have this problem.

It's definitive an AviSynth-Problem.
i was very angry bout this. I tried to encode my tv-recorded-mpg
via GKnot and every time i got this stupid access-violation error.
here an example: Angel_Avisynth_Prob2.mpg (1.7 MB) (http://www.biest.de/divx/Angel_Avisynth_Prob2.mpg)
it's not possible to encode it with avisynth.
But there are no corrupt datas or anything else.
The Playback of the mpg-file is still possible.
And direct-encoding via VirtualDubMod is possible too.
Just a problem with avisynth.
I hope i could help to fix this little bug.
cheers, G.

Same problem here ... it's very annoying!
This seems to be the biggest bug so far and should be on the main priority list.

Try submitting the bug to the avisynth developers at SF (attaching the file there as well...)

Just to be clear. The problem is not opening the script, but encoding it to some other format? Could you post your script?
Micro@Dee

I think it's not script related because VdubMod is running for a while but at a certain position it's crashing.

As MPEG2DEC(3) is not a part of AviSynth itself you're probably better off trying to get responses
here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53164).

since 0.28.3 uses completely different dlls, I suggest retesting the problem above...
The problem occurs in MPEG2Dec (all versions). But ill update the lastest MPEG2Dec3 soon with a fix. Read the thread posted by Sh0dan for more info.
-Nic
Ok mpeg2dec3 1.07 is out, please try that on any streams that seem to cause a crash. It should be more stable than any other mpeg2dec.
If you have a stream that causes problems, please let me know on that sh0dan linked to.
Cheers,
-Nic

For what it's worth, I am getting the exact same problem. (Here is a screenshot (http://www.brandeis.edu/~jmark/img/error.png) I took) This is a rather annoying issue. I am using the latest version of GKnot and the version included of VirtualDubMod.
I am not very knowledgeable about all of this, but all I know is that my jobs ran fine without a hitch with regular VirtualDub and gknot 0.27 -- can I just use Virtualdub instead of Virtualdubmod, or am I required to run VirtualDubMod with the latest version of Gknot? Also, how can I tell what version of Avisnyth I have, in case this does turn out to be an Avisynth issue? I did a search for Avisynth, and all I have is an Avisynth folder in my Gknot folder with a bunch of txt's.
Well, now you all know how clueless I am. :D Thanks for the help.
EDIT:Ah, I didn't notice the thread above with the new version of MPEG2Dec. I'll give it a try and report back...

Also had this problem.
It's not DivX/Xvid or other codec related. You just load the AVS file into VirtualDub and hit "playback of the input file", and at some very specific frames it crashes with the "access violation" message. It does not happen with every movie, only with very specific frames in very specific video streams, which for some reason offend Avisynth's senses.
Downgraded to 2.0.8 and the problem disappeared.

Thanks for the reply!
What exactly would be the best way to downgrade? I don't have an option under add/remove programs to uninstall AviSynth 2.5.
If any of you can provide short MPEG clips that cause crashes, please let me know :)
Also please tell me if any crashes occur with version v1.07 and above
(although I dont believe this is a mpeg2dec3 problem, this version may help)

and at some very specific frames it crashes with the "access violation" message.
This doesn't help a bit. If you would like the bug to go away - do as geneX and post a few frames where it always crashes.

@Nic: Please try the mpg from GeneX. That's a mpg that the WinTV PVR outputs. We've tried to fix the mpg-stream with Womble's MPG2VCR but it doesn't helped.
i have :) It works fine with MPEG2Dec3 v1.08 :) That release fixed it.
Are there any other MPEGs where the latest MPEG2Dec3 fails?

I have tried another mpg what crashed with an older mpeg2dec3-version.
No probs with the new mpeg2dec3 v1.08...

I have been able to replicate this error and fix it several times on more than one machine running Windows XP.
I was getting the generic "caught an access violation" using Avisynth scripts in TMPGenc.
Things were actually working fine on a brand new install and then the error poped up out of nowhere.
The only changes that had been made was the installation of Ulead DVD Workshop. I uninstall DVD Workshop and reboot. No error. Reinstall and reboot. Error.
I have tried reinstalling my codecs AFTER the Ulead install. It still gives an error.
Luckily I don't love the Ulead software all that much. There must be some type of MPEG2 codec it installs that is not shown but has priority.
Hopefully this helps get a step closer to eliminating the issue in Avisynth 2.52.
