View Full Version : Resize avi

I've got this avi file that has a resolution of 640 x 480. Because the file size is too big I want to resize the image to a smaller size (like 576 x 432) so that it can fit on a CD.
Is there a tool out there that can do this? I've searched all through virualdub, but it doens't look like that'll do the trick.
Thanks

I never know where to start when I read a post like this...
@dunDaan - It doesn't work like that. First of all, how big is the file?
You basically have 3 options.
1. You can split the movie and burn it on 2 CD's
2. You can (perhaps) overburn
3. You can recompress it
Depending on the size of the file different approaches are appropiate.

The file size is 750 Mb, so I don't want to ruin 1 CD with just 50 Mb.
It's not suitable for overburn (50 Mb is just a little too much :D ).
Tell me what you mean by recompress it. It's already in DivX format.
Thanks

Recompressing means that you take this already compressed file and compresses it again.
It isn't possible to just adjust the resolution and expect a smaller filesize automatically without recompressing.
There are also CDs that support over 700 MB, but I have no personal experience with these and I don't think just any burner can read/write them.
If you're set on getting it down to ~700 MB to burn it you need to recompress it. This isn't recommended as you will lose quality, but if you still want to do it just open the file in VirtualDub, select codec (DivX I presume) and configure it's settings.
If you don't know how to do this or what settings to use look around in Doom9 guides.

I've tried to use 800 Mb discs, but my CD-burner doesn't eat them so bad luck.
I'll try to recompress it and find out if that works.
Thanks for your help.:-):-):-):-):-)

No need for that!
Just make a XCD...
The CD is burned in a special mode without error-correction, but you can fit up to 796MB on a 700er-cdr...
You need a special directshow-filter for playback (or you can convert the XCD to a normal avi on the harddisk later on)...
Have a look in doom9s link-section...
Avi isn't the best format for XCDs, because if the header gets corrupted the file is lost, but this would be very bad luck I think...
I once burned an avi to a XCD and scratched the cd with a knife all over, and it still played fine :D

Excellent:D :D :D
I'll try it out. Thanks for the hint.

By the way, do you know any tools that can create XCD's. I think NERO can't.
Thanks

You mean how to burn the resulting image-file?
Well, the actual nero-versions support bin/cue images, you can just load the cue via file->burn image...
I personally suggest blindwrite, but you can also use alcohol 120%, fireburner, and many other burning utilities...
I think the latest versions of mode2cdmaker even have clone-cd-output...
I would get rid of the end credits using VirtualDub.
It MIGHT just reduce it enough so that you can overburn it
onto a 700mb CD.
This has worked for me in the past, although 50mb is
pushing it.

cropping off the credits should be first choice if you have problems like that... back in the old times this was far more often necessary as something like size predictability didn't exist...
anyway just recently i managed to add two 30 meg music videos to a 1 CD dvd rip after just cropping off the credits... so 50 megs should probably not be a problem. of course if it depends on several facts... length of credits, content (colour, or just b&w text), if you encoded them seperately, etc

The tool to create XCD is mode2CDmaker.

@dunDaan: Sorry, I got your question wrong...
I should of course have mentioned mode2cdmaker, not just XCD...
To make up for it, here are the links:
The main mode2cdmaker-homepage seems to be down at the moment, you can get the gui for it with all files necessary here:
http://zorgzorg31.free.fr/
For playback you need special filters, get it from the link in the doom9-guide for creating XCDs:
http://www.doom9.org/xcd.htm
You can convert the .dat file on the cd to an avi file on your harddisk later on using dat2file...

All: thanks very much. I succeeded in creating an XCD.
The only weird thing is that when I play the file in a mediaplayer, it indicates that the movie is over 11 hrs long. However when I convert the dat-file back to avi again, eveything is just notmal again. So this is a perfcet solution for me.
Thanks again.
