View Full Version : problem in making titles

I'm using Vegas video 4 for my NLE of avi files. I use ProCoder by Canopus for encoding from avi to mpg-2. After editing avi file and adding title to the beginning of clip, I save render as avi files and use stand-alone procoder to encode my clip. The problem that I see is there is a very noticeable staircase or jagged line on the edge of every font if it is Italic or slanted. I'm not sure if this is caused by V4 creating avi files or ProCoder encoder. I have tried to do the same thing with P6.5 which uses MainConcept encoder and did not see the same jagged edge on slanted fonts.
Please help if anybody has any idea.
Thanks
Are you rendering your fields the correct way round?
By the way, on a separate point, you can save yourself some time and improve your image quality slightly if you frameserve directly from Vegas to ProCoder, instead of rendering an AVI in between. To learn how to frameserve to ProCoder directly from Vegas, please readthis (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51815) thread.

Hi Arky,
Thanks for reply,
I'm rendering to MS avi file which is default NTSC-DV whitin Vegas video. I was not sure that I could frameserve from V4 to procoder. The site you'r refering talks about V4 to Premiere.
I also tried CCE 2.67 from my avi file and still see the jagged edge in slanted font. somehow CCE or procoder or even Main concept encoder makes the edge staricase looks. I just tried MyDVD which has a built in encoder,"I'm not sure what they are using" and notice there are much less jagged effect in there. So may be I'm doing some wrong setting in procoder or CCE.
Thanks
Ali
Firstly, trust me, you can frameserve from the Vegas 4 timeline directly to ProCoder.
Secondly, I am a little disturbed by your remark about using the "default NTSC" setting when exporting a DV-AVI from Vegas. Are you actually using NTSC source files, or is your Camcorder a PAL model?

Hi Arky,
I'm gone definitely try frame server to see if my problem goes away. Regarding the V4 set up I am pretty sure when I click Render As under file option it opens another window which it uses "NTSC DV" with this description under that:
Audio: 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, PCM Uncompressed.
Video: 29.97 fps, 720x480, Lower field first.
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 0.909. OpenDML compatible.
NTSC DV video files compatible with Sonic Foundry Video Capture.
Of course there are other template, i.e.
NTSC DV widescreen,
NTSC 24p (inserting 2-3 pulldown)
and PAL DV
PAL DV wide screen.
My source file is a direct DV transfer from Canon ZR-20 to MS avi type II under Vegas capture program.
Thanks
Ali
Yes, but is the Camcorder itself PAL or NTSC? I'm trying to establish whether you are accidentally rendering PAL source files as NTSC output.

Hi Arky,
My camcorder has NTSC output. I do not do use any PAL recording. By the way I found some interesting discovery last night. I did change my text color from bright red to different one like pure Blue, Green and Yellow. I believe my problem is codec which is built into Vegas video 4. Reason being when I select Uncompress video, which is one the choices under "File" and "Render AS" in V4 then slanted red font looks much better. Also when I use pure White color again the edges are perfect. Pure Red and Blue are the worst case. Green color has a little symptom. Thus Procoder encoder has nothing to do with this problem.
I also have to try Frame serving that you suggested seeing if I can bypass the rendering.
One more note that I did use different codec i.e. Main Concept, Canopus too and they all demonstrate the same jagged edge symptom on pure RED and Blue color.
I guess I can solve my problem by not using any pure red (R=255,G=0,B=0)in my slanted text.
Thanks for help.

Arky,
I just finished testing Frame serving software by PluginPac from the site you mentioned on your first post and it worked like champ. Now I am pretty sure that rendering with VV4 is doing this flawed jagged edge problem. You are absolutely correct, not only it gave me better quality it also saved me time to skip rendering to AVI and then encoding to MPG.
Thanks again for your excellent advice.
