Hi! I was already viewing this forum and encoding with gordian knot along time ago but now i decided to start participating in this... :)
If the problem that i'm going to refer is stupid or it was already referred sorry.... :)
I have GordianKnot 0.28 with Divx 5.0.5 Pro, when i tried to encode Saving Private Rian (2h47), i did as the guides said and i did a compressibility check (5%)...here is the problem...all the films that i have ripped before with GordianKnot 0.27 and Divx 5.0.2 Pro give a compressibility check of 3 or 4 Mbs...now when i'm trying to do a compressibility check of saving private ryan... it gives me a 164 mb compressibility check...is this normal?
(I did a check up for previous topics and i didn't find any topic referring this)

Hi and welcome to the forum-
I've no idea to what you're referring when you mention 3 and 4 MB vs 164 MB (do you mean 30 and 40 MB?). What are the percentages and the other pertinent information (such as resolution or the .avs)? However, SPR is a famously difficult-to-compress film. It's very difficult to compress for 2 CDs and have it look decent, and you'll probably be better off trying for 3 CDs. If you're trying to do it for 1 CD, then forget it.

the old comptest made a DivX first pass, the new one makes DivX quality based at quant 2 which theoretically would produce big files but doesn't GK use the cl switch added by Johnny to avoid data is written to the file?
I think 164MB is how much CyanWhisper get oversized...
CyanWhisper, give us more detailed info :)

Let me answer to this questions and also want to thanks to all people that replied...:D
1st- I was trying to rip for 3 cds with ac3 sound...
2nd- When i riped with guardian Knot 0.27...it was with a 5%
3rd- Resolution: 640*352
And the more stranger of thi is... I did a compressibility check...with 2 % and with the configuration indicated above i noticed a strange fact it gives me a 34.4%....(that's really strange.... 3cds)
Thanks a lot to all people in this forum that are here to help the newcomers....:D

Hi-
Now we're getting somewhere.
34.4%....(that's really strange.... 3cds)
No, not so strange at all. This is SPR we're talking about; one of the least compressible films ever made. It's long, and they added in a lot of noise purposely, and made it kind of brownish looking to simulate the appearance of WW2 newsreels. There are a bunch of things you can do to aid in the compressibility. You can transcode the AC3 to 256, 320 or 384 to free up a lot of bits for the video (use AC3Machine). You can use a slightly softer resizer. You can encode the credits with a much higher quantizer (maybe you're already doing that). You can go with a lower resolution. You can use filters (TemporalCleaner, TemporalSoften, C3D, FluxSmooth, etc.). Because of all the noise, you can get away with a lower percentage than normal, and still have it look real good (maybe aim for 50-60%). With this movie you have to be prepared to do some work. Or buy the DVD and forget all about it. :)

Or buy the DVD and forget all about it.That should be a non-issue since this forum is all about backing up right? :D

You never know. CyanWhisper might be from one of the European countries whose citizens are allowed to back up rentals. Otherwise though, you're right, and of course he already owns it.
By the way, CyanWhisper, your low percentage is unusual, but not unheard of. I don't know the audio file size, but I'm guessing that your first pass video size is 4.5-5 GB. Other modern movies with similar uncompressibility would include The Abyss, Waterworld, Pi, Akira and Tigerland. There are a bunch of classic films in the same league, including Seven Samurai, Alexander Nevsky and a whole host of silent films.

i didn't do any pass because of this results....and one question... manono where do i find that filters and how do i apply them to guardian knot? and if a more simpler question...is this film possible ripping with guardian knot or i have to do it manually?
Thanks a lot everyone
