i thought it was time to start a little thread on custom matrixes, because if one seeks information about them one would find the info spread over various threads without compare.
i personally tried bulletproofs high quality matrix recently and i liked it. since i lack the time to sit down and encode and compare through the several matrixes i could find, i would like to hear some opinions about the various matrixes flying around and if they really differ a lot at all.
hope someone joins in..

I tried that very same matrix and it's not bad.
But I haven't done a real compare with the standard matrix really.
At least I'm pretty sure that matrix doesn't screwup your encode.

nicely said ;)
what i also could figure is that it comes out with better quality for the same filesize as h263 does, looked quite as good as mpeg to me, actually. it might depend on the movie, though, i don't know (so i started this thread, hehe..).
i use hvs good for anime, hvs better for normal movies. main reason i use it is increased compressability, the quality isnt anything majorly different but im a lot closer to quant 2 encodes with this :)
1 day ill work out what is halfway between hvs good and hvs better and try it out (hvs good isnt perfect in some situations)

In this recent thread Drebel posted some custom matrix comparison results:

I have made a couple of encodes with the hvs-best and andreas78er matrices with great success. For anime, I stick to h.263 or hvs-good.
In general, which do you think would look better:
1) 2CD-ac3 encode of a 2-hr movie with h.263, vhq1, chroma me and no b-frames yielding final size approx. 70% of 1st pass
or
2) same encode (and resolution) with andreas78er or hvs-best, vhq1, chroma me and b-frames=2 (perhaps with Koepi's suggested threshold of 255 - great compressibility gain) yielding final size approx. 60% of 1st pass
From my limited tests, 2) definitely looks sharper and doesn't seem to sacrifice quality with the lower compress percentage or b-frames. Another possibility would be 1) with the original mpeg matrix instead of h.263, I guess, but it's somewhat of a thrill using a custom matrix and tweaking xvid to fit the size I need.
