Capture problem with VirtualDubVCR

Whenever I've made a scheduled capture, I get the same error message as when I've tried to capture with overlay on.

I've tried setting preview on by default and also without preview or overlay but when the computer boots and the scheduled recording starts, the error message pops up.

I'm using a Hauppauge WinTV Theatre card, Win98SE and Hauppauge's VfW drivers. I've tried the BTWinCap drivers but the audio doesn't work properly every time, sometimes stereo sounds like mono because both channels are identical.

I'm quite sure it's just some setting that's wrong but I'd still appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

are you sure you didn´t only change initial display mode to "preview" but then forgot about saving the changed settings afterwards?
your problem doesn´t seem to be a software issue.

("save extra capture settings" to be found right above "initial display mode")

second answer may sound a little stupid but not all programmes broadcast via tv are stereo just because your soundcard is able to record stereo-sound...
older tv-series or even movies may still have mono-sound. but if you get two audio channels at all you´re very likely to capture in stereo mode.
maybe it´s a good idea to check windows volume control either. (there you can see if line in mode is set to stereo)

I've noticed that even if the preview is on by default at startup, VDub gives the error message when starting capture. I played a little with ScriptIt and noticed that I have to keep overlay on at startup and then make ScriptIt press 'P' to get the preview on. I did myself a timer with ScriptIt but it needs a little more work to adjust when needed which is not nice if you're in a hurry.

My ears can tell a difference between a fake stereo with both channels the same and true, separated stereo. I get the true stereo on sometimes by messing with AudioSel.exe but since it doesn't work nearly every time, it's not worth it.

Hauppauge's on WDM drivers give perfect stereo sound but as you probably know, they don't work in VDub properly. VirtualVCR has its own problems with lumps of frames being suddenly dropped and no segmented capturing so that can't be used either.

I guess I'm just stuck with Win98SE for capturing;)

I guess I'm just stuck with Win98SE for capturing Why? I use WinXP with a WinTV PCI card and the Hauppauge VFW (v3.11 for Win2K) drivers and they work fine.

Ever since I switched from a GeForce to a Radeon, I've been unable to get proper audio with the VfW drivers. The audio gets very muffled and therefore VfW drivers can't be used. I don't know how a video card could cause this but it's probably some PCI/AGP bus issue.

Hmmm, I moved from a GeforceTi4200 to a Radeon 9700np but didn't notice any problem with the audio. Exactly what problem do you have? Come to think about it I actually use the audio from the cable->VCR->Sblive 5.1 but I still use headphones via the Cable->WinTv->Onboard Ac'97 and haven't noticed any problems.

If I simply use the WinTV program to watch TV, the audio is fine. When I start the program, audio can be heard from one channel and in a second, the other channel initializes.

When I start VirtualDub and go to the capture mode, the first channel initializes OK and then when the second one comes out, the sound gets extremely stuffy (hard to describe;) ) , it's like all the higher frequencies were cut off. I could get you a sample so you'd know what I mean;)

Are you using the audio out from the WinTV to the line in on your sound card? which sound card do you have?

Yes, audio goes straight from the TV card to the audio card. The problem occurs with both SB Live Value (my previous card) and Hercules GameSurround Muse LT (my current card).

I'm just beginning to suspect that Hercules has screwed something up in the Radeon FDX 8500LE.
