View Full Version : Better Quality than DVD Shrink?

I'm new to all this. Used DVD Shrink and like everything about it except when I use no compression, there is still a noticeable loss in picture quality. Are there any one-program solutions that produce better quality than DVD Shrink when you don't need compression but are close to being as fast as DVD Shrink and have the built in functionality to burn movie-only and leave out unecessary audio tracks and subtitle data? Or is DVD Shrink currently the standalone leader as far as having the right quality/speed/functionality trade off without having to use multiple programs? I can live with the loss in quality on DVD Shrink when I need to shrink a movie, but sometimes I want no compression with no loss in picture quality using a tool that doesn't take 3 or more hours for the whole process.

There is no loss in quality with level 0.

I just figured out I mistakenly thought Level 1 was no compression. I thought you always had to go through the re-encode. Thanks for the clarification. As I said, I'm a newbie. Thanks everyone for your patience. DVD Shrink is the perfect tool for me.

Okay, I just copied a DVD usng the Reauthor function to select the movie only, and then selected 'Copy Files' I wrote to a DVD+RW and the tried playing it on my home player and the motion is jerky and the picture is terrible - it's worse than when I used Level 1 transcoding! Is it because I used a DVD+RW or did I miss something in the DVD Shrink configuration? I'm out of DVD+R's so I won't be able to verify if it is a media problem until laters this week when my DVD+R's arrive.

A little reading goes a long way http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51406

Thanks mpu. The only thing though is I don't see any solutions posted regarding the DVD Shrink playback problems? So this leads me back to my original question, if not DVD Shrink, what's the next best thing?

IMHO, DVD95Copy. Though not freeware, it's a great investment at a decent consumer price.

Accprding to what I've read, DVD95Copy is not a one-tool solution as you need to use other programs with it. I want simple.

how simple do people want it?

the only difference between DVD95Copy & DVDShrink is you gotta rip it yourself

taken from a post on the DVD95Copy forum

any chance it can put the original DVD into DVD-ROM & Blank DVD-R into DVD writer for me so all I do is turn on computer?

seeing as people want DVD Backup Tools to do everything I thought I'd take it one step further

:p

I don't mind burning with Nero, I like Nero. You need to rip, then use DVD95Copy, then you need to burn. Three seperate programs. I draw the line at 2 - the copier and the burner (I like Nero). If I keep having playback problems with DVD Shrink though, I'll have to start using 3 programs (and waiting longer).

you draw the line at 2 programs?, OK as you are new to thisthen I understand but have you ever used DVDDecrypter?

it's simple and you ain't waiting that much longer

if you watch carefully and rip the DVD 1st with DVDDecryter, then use DVDShrink after, you will see how much faster DVDShrink actually works than when it's ripping & processing direct!

a test I did before :

No. 1 - dvdshrink movie only direct rip and process - 18 mins 25 secs
TOTAL 18 mins 25 secs

No. 2 - dvddecrypter rip files 9 mins 20 secs - /process dvdshrink - 10 mins 15 secs
TOTAL 19 mins 35 secs

so it's not that much faster really is it?

you don't have to sit at the PC and watch the progress bar when you use DVDDecrypter but at least using the best ripper available means less chance of failure of playback

you could always buy DVDXCOPY Xpress cos that does most of it for you also (can't comment on it tho) but I still feel it's better to keep Ripping, Processing and Burning to dedicated programs

but I guess you just want it really really simple yet I always thought Rip, Process & Burn was simple enough :)

If that's the case (time difference), then I may be a DVD95Copy convert shortly. :)

have you thought about DVD2One cos I see you stated movie-only?

thats more dedictated to a movie only project than DVD95Copy is

DVD95Copy gives more options if you wanna keep the menu/extras but sometimes struggles on the movie-only part

so if you want just movies then DVD2One is the better option

they both give roughly the same quality picture wise for movie-only, but DVD2One is faster at processing and only needs the relevant movie files ripping

so it's around 10 mins ripping and 15-20 processing

dunno if there is still a trial available

One problem I already see with the DVD95Copy is that due to the 2-step process, you need twice as much hard drive space free. I've got an eposodic DVD that is almot 9GB, so I'm going to need close to 13GB of free space, 9GB for the ripped files and 4+ for the files DVD95 creates. I've only got 10 GB free right now. What a pain.

MackemX

10GB

you need a little more than that :)

no the wonder you wanted a direct ripper/processing tool :)

yeah I started out with DVDShrink as well and thought it would be a pain to use more programs but it really isn't I am using DVD2one now and its great for movie only cut out all the crap and burn away. I use DVD Decrypter to rip the files to the HD and then DVD2one for the burn files really easy give it a shot email me or message me if you have any questions adn I can let you know what I've found. and the HD space is a problem maybe it's just time to anny up and buy some more space.

My problem is that I have 19GB of avi files I downloaded from my digital video recorder that I haven't authored the DVD's for yet!

I wish there was an easy way to do a movie only copy with no compression when you just want to copy a few episodes. I was playing around with DVD Decrypter and in IFO mode only selecting the first episode and all its chapters but I guess the IFO file makes DVD Shrink (or other authoring programs) think all of the episodes are there. (Is this when you need to use IFOEdit). When I go into File mode the VBO files are mostlty 1GB even and don't correspond to the episodes like the list of files you see in DVD Shrink with the re-author command. If DVD Shrink can break out the episodes, why can't DVD Encrypter do it. I mean if there is going to be no compression it sees like you should just be able to rip the episodes and chapters you want and then go directly to Nero to burn. I know, I know, I have a lot to learn.

you and me both man this is gonna be a long education

so what are you trying to do?

which DVD is is it?

what files does it contain?

what is on DVD, episodes etc?

what are you wanting to keep from the DVD?

there may be ways to do it even with 10Gb, but I can't understand exactly what you are trying to do

Is that all? I have an entire season of Farscape (22 episodes) on hold until I can find a way to properly IVTC them (original shot at 25fps for Australia, not the normal 24fps for film, and then telecined for NTSC with a 4:5 pulldown). Each episode takes 24G - thank you Western Digital for the huge rebates on 120G and 200G drives!

Telecide().Decimate(6)

should do the trick.

That's one way, but I'm keeping these captures until I find a way to make NTSC DVDs. I want to get back to the 25fps source and then devise a custom pulldown sequence - off the beaten path, so to speak. I can see from the capture that SciFi channel repeated every 5th field.
But, let's not set a bad example by getting OT :)
