what is mp2 5.1?

If I understand correctly (someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.I'd honestly like to know) its multichannel mpeg 1 audio layer 2.Its used in svcd,but as I understand it the 5.1 isn't very well suported in players.There's a guide for converting to mp2 here http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/audio-guides.htm
