What's a fansub?

What is / are fansubs?

Heard about them in the forums, but I do not want to ask in those forum's because it IS a newbie question.

"Fansub" in the vast majority of cases refers to Japanese animation translated and subtitled into another language.

I guess technically it can also be what I've been doing for some time now: creating and timing subtitles in Japanese for some old foreign films that IMHO don't have a chance of ever being translated in an official way. It's a lot of work and pain, of course, but it's fun and not too bad at all if you stretch it out over time.

Anime fansubs are usually done by groups that are often in bitter competition it seems...
