I would like to rip the audio track from a dvd. (metallica cunning stunts and s&m) what would be the best way of doing it? i would like to retain almost 100% of the quality. Would the audio track from the S&M dvd, be better than the audio from the CD I already own?

Now im pretty sure the audio is 5.1, does it make a difference? It will only be played back usually on 2.1 speakers.

I've looked through the ac3 -> ogg guide, would these be the proper way of doing i wanted? Because as too my knowledge id need to rip the entire DVD, anyway of ripping just the audio?

thanks heaps :)

edit:
Found a way to rip the audio, found some programs to convert the ac3 to Ogg. Not sure what is thr right way about it though... Would u use the 2channel or 6 channel file? Any easy way to split it?

I have the same problem, the music is 10 times better on the DVD than the CD, its really awful. So how did you do it I still haven't been able to do it. I am new at this. Thanks

I haven't done this before, but this should work.

Rip the DVD using DVD Decrypter.
Then use the stream processing in DVD Decrypter (or DVD2AVI) to extract the audio track(s).

These Audio tracks should be ac3 files, and you can use besweet to convert these to ogg, or whatever you want to do with them.

The DSPguru_Ogg_Vorbis_2ch should be suitable (you may want to turn the bitrate up in the [AC3 & OGG] section.

I'm not familiar with this particular DVD, and I obviously don't know how the audio was recorded for that title, but in theory the audio from the CD would be a better choice to encode from than the DVD, because the audio format of a CD is uncompressed wave, and the audio format of the DVD is compressed AC3 (i.e. lossy) especially when encoding to a 2-channel format for playback in stereo, CD audio should be the way to go quality-wise IMHO.
