After couple days of experimenting and learning I managed to author DVD with subtitles with DVD Maestro. From textual titles, via couple methode (Maestro SBT, Spruce subtitle file).
It is pretty good, but man always want better - I want shadowed subtitles. Is there some software to get such pictures from text based subs?
Or maybe try batch processing of Paint Shop Pro? :)

you can create a shadow for your subs, when you create the subs file, make the shadow a solid black (eg), the text red(and blue for a little non-completelyflat look), and the background white, and when you import the subs, you can set the white to completely transparent, the red to opaque white, the blue to opaque grey and the black to a semi-transparent black.

might take a bit of experimenting, but can turn out quite nice.

Well, I made it yesterday after couple day experimenting.
Main thing was program Eye Batch, which can processing same operations on many bitmaps.
I figured out how to deal with colors and transparency.
Bitmaps are generated with Maestro SBT, it can be with outline or without.
From your post is not clear how to make (get) shadows...
