View Full Version : Why DVD2DVD-R ?

Apologise if this is a bit long winded but I need to get my head around the heirachy of all these programs and where each one fits into the "family tree" of DVD backup methods.

I am trying to settle on a standard method of encoding the "LARGE" (+6GB m.m.o.) movies to get them onto single DVD-R.

My question is - When using CCE for encoding large, movie only +6GB main movies, can anyone tell me in basic terms what the advantages are of using these below and why would I would maybe choose one instead of another :

* DVD2DVDR over DVD2SVCD in ramped up mode

* DoXXXX4U methods over DVD2DVDR

and more broadly, using one of these "CCE" methods over a one-clicker like Shrink or IC7. ( I think this is obvious but life has taught me never to assume anything)

(NOTE - I only do PAL movies so the IfoEdit issues in DVD2DVDR shouldn't apply to me (?)

I've mainly have been using IC7 and DVDShrink 1.03 up to now.

I see people talking about DVD2DVD-R. Having used DVD2SVCD this seemed like the next logical progression to me. Allowing the use of CCE to get the best (picture quality) DVD end result.

Then I read about people using good old DVD2SVCD and ramping up the settings to make it output at "DVD" quality.

Today I started reading the "DoItFast4U & DoCCE4U" forum and some guides for those and I'm thinking.... arrrggghhh!!! These all seem to be doing the same sort of thing, using the same CCE for encoding. What do I choose..

DVD2SVCD can't do subtitles...and not sure about multiple audio..anyway no subs for me kills it ...for others it's fine. Use Maestro cuz that's what it exports chapters as.

yep your a lucky son of a gun

Remember DVD2DVD-R is Main movie only. If you want to do 1:1 and episode dvds encoding with CCE then you have no choice but to use DoItFast4U, DoCCE4U, ReAuthorist, and Scenarist.

Excellent reply. These are the sort of things I wanted to know.

I like the simplicity of DVD2DVDR and I am only talking Main Movies so it gets a tick there.

Would I be right in saying that the main reason I would use a DIF4U and Friends method of CCE encoding is to maintain the exact strucutre of the original DVD with the menus etc and that if I only want to encode the main movie with CCE then I would get the same result (movie quality) by using DVD2DVDR which seems a lot simpler to use ?

I figure there must be something really super-duper about using aDoItFast4U and freinds, CCE encoding method, because it seems fairly complicated to learn but it must have a real advantage somewhere if so many people are taking the time to do it.

Cheers...

If you only care about the movie then you would get the best quality by using dvd2dvdr.
If you care about maintaining an exact backup of your DVD movie including menus and extras, then you will get the best quality by using doitfast4u.

Since doitfast4u wants you to back up the menus and extras you won't have as much space left for the main movie, so obviously the movie will always look "best" if you only back up the movie alone.
Unless the movie is short and therefore the extra bits wont' make much difference...

I use CCE and DVD2AVI and Scenarist to make movie-only backups. The quality is far superior to using DVd2ONE or IC 7. but for short movies like 1 1/2 hours, I'll use dvd2one...or if its an episodic dvd with more than one "main movie" then i'll try out IC7 on it...

I would like to try out DVD2DVDR but i heard its all in german and i don't speak a word of german.

Yes, i forgot to mention, i'm using it only for PAL movies. I live in Spain.
I've just finished Saving Private Ryan, a big size monster of 7.10 GB and the quality is excellent. I've only selected one audio track.
