View Full Version : Re-authoring episode DVDs. Ifoedit faster than Maestro?

I've already been re-authoring some of my Buffy DVD's with Ifoedit and some with Maestro. Now I'm thinking bout which way to go, cause I've not decided yet. Since I'm not very used to either tools and with Ifoedit being still developed I don't know yet which is best suited for my purposes. Maybe some of you can give me a hint, this is what I want:

I'm ripping eps of some of my Buffy DVDs to create new ones with 3 eps/DVD-R for doing arc runs with my friends. I want to have each of the eps keep it's 14 original chapter points while being able to use the menu key on the remote from whatever chapter of the current ep to jump to the next subsequent episode while the title key always jumps to ep 1 chapter 1.

There are 2 methods I've used so far:

1.) Maestro

I've used DVD Decrypter's batch function to strip all streams of an ep directly from my original DVD to their specific subdirs on my HD, Subrip to extract the subs and imported those assets into Maestro where I re-authored them to my liking.

pros

unattended, automated ripping process in one step to get the desired streams
fast and easy graphical drag & drop method of setting chapters and ep jump points

cons

additional compiling step needed
subtitle extraction has to be manually launched for each ep, no atuomation
lots of HD space needed due to thousands of small subtitle bmps
time consuming

2.) Ifoedit

I've used DVD Shrink to extract the eps I wanted to HD, used Vobedit to join them and Ifoedit to write the new ifos.

pros

less HD consuming
less time consuming ripping process
less chances of encountering errors/problems of any kind since the desired vobs are already muxed

cons

no batch function yet to extract complete eps to their dirs neither in DVD2ONE nor in DVD Shrink
vob merging has to be done manually per ep which is quite time consumuing
rather difficult for newbies to find your ways through the ifo and to set the right triggers

So far I prefer using Maestro since a lot of steps - though time consuming - can be run unattended so I can do other stuff in the meantime. Yet there are several issues that prove difficult to solve, e.g. some chapter points aren't correct and some german audio streams are shorter than the english ones so I get out-of-sync errors. I've got no idea from what these errors result and so I'd might be better off using Ifoedit. Thanks for your suggestions.
