View Full Version : What do I gain from Gordian Knot?

Hi,

I've been encoding DVD video successfully using Robot4Rip to decrypt/demux, BeSweet to encode AC3 to VBR MP3, and then VDub Mod to compress video and remux the audio.

So far the results are really good.

Upon initial inspection, Gordian Knot seems a really complex beast, what will I gain from using it?

Cheers,
K

Basically Gknot just provides a central place to do all of what you are already doing. It just simplifies the whole process by providing a nice frontend to do everything from.

...and also a fastest way to do all calculations about cropping, resolution, aspect ratio, file size and so on.

This is what I find the best support it gives.

And a feature I also like is the compressability test which will help you in the following ways:
1) Decision to make 1 or 2 CD's.
2) Prevent undersized movies.
3) Fine-tune the parameters (especially the resolution) to attain 'optimum' quality (optimum of course being 'in the eye of the beholder').

I think the most useful feature, aside from the compressibility tests to check if your video will look good enough, is the bitrate calculator, which easily allows you to hit specific sizes and takes into consideration all audio streams, overhead, etc. The batch processing can also be very helpful, although since I now pretty much only use AviMux to do the audio it doesn't land you with completed files. Still, it has an advantage over tools like Jonny's Enc (which is also very good) because you can add jobs while processing (although not do comp tests--which is where Jonny's prog comes in!)

Correct me If I missed a thread or post but isn’t GKnot’s (current v28) comp test inaccurate for DivX 5.05?
