Hi all, I would like to convert an AVI to an SVCD but am unsure as to how to go about it using DVD2SVCD any help would be gratefully received.

In addition to this info can you point me in the right direction for the correct setup of DVD2SVCD for each of the tabs I'm using CCE 2.50

best regards Darkna9el :D

You probably could have done a better job searching this forum for information before posting a generalized question like this, but a thread on AVI2SVCD might help out a few people so what the heck:

1> First, when posting about AVI2SVCD, always state the source. DV, DIVX, XVID, etc.
2> If not DV then always check and see how the audio was done and mention it in your post. There are so many odd audio formats used in Xvid/Divx that it makes your head spin. Preprocessing the audio into a standard format is usually needed, but we need to know the format to help.
3> Pal or NTSC?

There are just too many variables in Divx AVI2SVCD conversions. It should be considered an advanced function for advanced users only (IMO). DV conversion on the other hand is a piece of cake. So, get us the information requested above and maybe we can help you.

Well, a couple of things come to mind.

1> This may sound stupid but always play the avi in wmp first to verify you have all the correct codecs installed. Wake up and smell the coffee! :) If it don't play in wmp it ain't gonna encode.

2> One thing I think folks should always do is open the divx in VDub or VDubMod and save the audio out as a wav file and the video out as a directstream copy and then remux them as a new source. Or maybe you could select directstream copy for the video and use full processing in audio and select PCM (no compression) and make a new source. I don't have a divx handy to test that.

Verify this new avi will play in sync in WMP. Again, if it does not, it is not going to magically sync up in AVI2SVCD.

If it does then it should encode just fine in AVI2SVCD.

BTW, 2 above is one of the main reasons I have been trying to talk DVD2SVCD into adding a "use external wave file" in the AVI2SVCD section of the program. It would be a lot quicker to do the above if we had this new feature. Instructing new users would then be SO much easier with a simple one liner: "Please save audio to wav format and use it as your external source in AVI2SVCD"

D2S, you listening? :)

Hi all, The Avi file is a file I'm downloading from WinMX and is not finished yet, about 67% done.

I didn't realise the work one had to do to get an AVI to SVCD but always ready to learn...

I'm hoping it's Pal but until it's finished downloading how can I tell? and what is the difference? more encoding for NTSC?

I have virtualDub already and made a copy of the downloading file and tried to play it but it wouldn't play, I can recall someone stating that there is a block or something like that at the end of the AVI file that prevents you from playing a partially downloaded file; i may be wrong lol!

I've tried to play the copied file in WMP and it loads but doesn't show a picture or play sound, I've also tried in PowerDVD and all I get is noise and no picture.

I'm quite used to DVD2SVCD; I redrew the logo for it, quite a while ago though, but wanted to know if i'd got it set up to run it's best

DivFix (see doom9 downloads) will build an index block for an incomplete avi file - divx or xvid possibly other formats - I've never checked).

Make a copy of the file, open it with DivFix and click "Rebuild Index".

As for setting up the tabs. In "Misc" select AVI as your source. Open the avi in the conversion tab. You will have to set the appropriate aspect ratio manually. Check the movie length and then set up the bitrate tab to get it onto the desired number of CD's.
This simple way works for the vast majority of avi files I've downloaded.

If you want, DivFix a 10 minute clip and convert that as a test before you spend one night downloading the film and another night converting it! Then if it doesn't work out, check out the more advanced guides.

If you want, DivFix a 10 minute clip ... By all means try all that before the VDub stuff mentioned above. Some of the avis will just load right up and encode with no problem. All except the ones I try :)

Hi Guys, well story so far...

downloaded avi, downloaded DivFix put the two together and got... "This is not an AVI file"

Tried to play it in WMP and it opens it as a Audio MPEG file; found this out under by right clicking the file while in WMP and clicking on properties, WinAmp does the same, both produce what i can only describe as a high pitched bubbling sound!!
Realplayer one just sits there, PowerDVD gives up and closes.

VirtualDub reports: 'Cannot determine file type' when the 'Files of Type' is set to All useable Types

When set to 'AVI (Compatability Mode) AVI, AVS' it reports: 'AVI Report filter error: Bad Format (80044066)'
