XVID -> SVCD freezing computer

I have had no problem encoding from divx to svcd, but when I try to do the same with an xvid source the program freezes the entire computer. Is this due to a faulty xvid decompressor installed? I have the latest binary, but do not know anything about its stability. When trying to edit the source range of the xvid file I continuously got some TMPG error (I do not remember it at the moment) and had to close the program. Finally I decided to just encode the entire file at once and split it with bbmpeg later. A few minutes after hitting start, though, the entire computer froze. I had tmpg set to encode with 2-pass vbr, avg bitrate 1600. I have the latest version, what is the problem??

Maybe the file has an error? Does TMPGEnc freeze every time after the same couple of seconds/minutes?

If yes, then there is an error in the file. Normaly nearly every codec works with TMPGEnc! Try to repair the file or try this trick :

Don't use 2-Pass, use CBR and try again and look if TMPG is freezing at the same time, if yes you should do the job in CBR. Look at the frames, when TMPG crashes ... write it down!
Then Do the same but use the source range feature and use the startframe AFTER the frame TMPG crashes, try to find the next working frame an do it again. If there are only some frames missing, you even won't notice it.

If you still want it in 2-Pass, then encode in CBR or something similar but at the highest bitrate! You can get 4 gigs and then you can do the job in 2-Pass, then the file is working.

I never had personaly such an case, but I think that you could manage it like I wrote. If someone know something better, post it please!

Well I feel stupid. I tried what you suggested (among many other things) and finally found my problem. My cpu was overheating :( So when I encode I open up my case and have another big fan blow on it -- no problems! Sorry for the bad question.
