I installed Xvid as a part of the Gordian Knot Beta (5) , codec pack 0.9 which includes DivX5.04 & XviD-05042003-1 (also divX3.11).
The install process seems to go OK, the Xvid installation went smoothly. Yet when I try to locate the Xvid codec in VirtualDub, it is not there. Also, when trying to use it in G knot, the pass 1 & pass 2 buttons do nothing, and the avi seems to encode without any compression. (i have had to abort the process as the projected file sizes have been huge.)
DivX 5.04 encoding works fine however, to watch the movies, I've had to disable ffdshow handling DivX as it always crashes reporting error in Xvid.dll.
The problem may well be caused by a hacked version of DivX 4 previously installed (by error - how I got it I do not know - it was Virtual Dub that first warned me). Indeed, although the codec 3.11 should be avasilable in Nandub only DivX 4 high & low motion & DivX 5.04 are available (apart from unused others). I have tried to remove all refrences to the earlier hacked DivX codec, but each time I re-install, the same problems occur.
This is the sort of problem that irritates, but hardly drives me crazy. I only installed the new G Knot to use DivX, but it has alerted me to a config problem on my system, and Xvid does look rather interesting. So any help would be greatly apreciated.

Try downloading the XviD binaries from Koepi's site and installing them manually (as opposed to the automatic way of GK). Does it work?

Thanks, I tried downloading XviD-04102002-1.exe. But still No XVid!

Further to last post, I did install it.

Sorry, don't know what's wrong then. But it's obviously not a GK problem.

Thankyou for your reply. I searched my registry. The only place I found drivers32 was under HKeylocalmachine/software/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion (although I am using WindowsMe). There were no blank entries, although under the key vidc.xvid there is the entry xvid.dll.

Following the last suggestion, I searched for all entries of XVid.dll in the registry. Strangely, the only entry was unders Drivers32 in the WindowsNT section.
I noticed that all the other codecs were also listed under LocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\icm, but not XVID. I have tried to manually create an entry pointing to the XVID.dll, but to no avail. Should it be here? (or anywhere else?) and if so, how should it be listed?
