good news everyone! Things are moving fast.
The new API (dev-api-4) is now close to final. We got a new rate-distorsion optimized quantization mode (Trellis Quant) and differential Global Motion Estimation (GME) is ready to be included into the code as well.
When these features have proved to be stable, it's time for XVID 1.0. Stay tuned!
i've just read this on xvid.org
Does anyone have some technical informations about the Trellis Quant and the new GMC (3points ? )

Read this month's and last of the xvid developers mailing list. Trellis quant was in ffmpeg first so they have info there about it too.
GMC 3 point, is just GMC with 3 warp points. XviD currently uses 2 where as DivX (AFAIK) uses 1.
@all: Dont get too obsessed about a "1.0" nothing really changes just because a number gets increased ;)

From http://homepages.pathfinder.gr/ffvfw/libavc-options.txt
"trellis quantization will find the optimal encoding for each 8x8 block
it is a simple optimal quantization in the PSNR vs bitrate sense"

@nic: well... stable binaries are usually just that.. stable, and optimized for speed (something which you really can't say for the current developer builds). And if they include the new VWF GUI it might make the codec much more usable for less experienced people.

Can someone post a screenshot (or link to one) of this new VFW GUI? I'd just like to get a peek to wet me taste buds.

Well, not exactly a GUI but... :D

I've done some searching but I still haven't figured out what 'reduced resolution' option is. What is it and what does it do?

"the mpeg-4 *advanced realtime simple* ("arts") profile has simple loop filtering, however its only used for reduced resolution frames. reduced resolution frames are essentially resized by a factor of 0.5 before encoding, and resized during decoding.
xvid supports reduced encoding/decoding"
From http://www.xvid.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=1192&highlight=reduced+resolution&sid=e2ca21aee9502232d972c0f6c4ff4166

Cool! Is that option available in the recent developer releases in the VFW GUI? It is in the windows registry as "reduced_resolution" set to a value of false.

Anyway, reduced resolution VOPs are NOT part of advanced simple profile! They're meant for streaming video. That means, it's not compatible with anything we're doing here.

@doom9: Well the thing is that the stable builds weren't always that stable and nothing will be finalised and set in stone. Too many new things have been added. But for me the development builds have always been pretty stable. And I fear that, unless done well, a new VFW might just confuse matters more.
But yes, your right a 1.0 build will probably be far more thoroughly tested than a standard dev build. But XviD is stable now, even if some of its functional options aren't working perfectly (but then again DivX is worse)

Very true, but just due to the notion of "change", we will get more questions/complaints/requests of the new vfw than we have at present of the old one.
And of course every guide will need updating.
(This doesn't mean im against the change...I love change in XviD...im just saying it won't be the holy grail some hope it will be)

Nic:@all: Dont get too obsessed about a "1.0" nothing really changes just because a number gets increased
Well that's true, but you're forgetting the fact that generally a 1.0 release is considered a landmark in the development of a program.
Even if we in this forum don't look at it this way, it <could> have a serious impact on the large majority of the encoding community.
1.0 is usually considered 'ready for everybody' to use.

Even to Doom9 to benchmark :)

"it <could> have a serious impact on the large majority of the encoding community."
Your right, but the reason I initially wrote what I wrote is because we've seen lots of posts and Ive had alot of emails where people write: "I like XviD alot, but I wont start using it until it gets to 1.0 for now ill stick with DivX".
Which is crazy talk ;)

ps
Thinking about it, I think ill close this now. And we can just wait upon the arrival of 1.0. Instead of hypothesising.
