Hi,

I'd like to ask if there is some way to increase the speed of the encoding with Divx 5.02 (without losing quality ofcourse).

Also if there is a detailed guide to ALL of its options,what they do exactly and how they affect the result etc.

Something else.Sometimes i capture something from VHS and then Divx crashes in the same spot (or %) of the 1st pass of the 2-pass encoding.But when i then encode it with the same parameters but 1-pass only , it completes fine ! Why is that ? Is it a bug that has been dealt with in Divx 5.05 ?

Increase speed? Hard to say how if you don't give some more info, like: Configuration of your PC, are you running any filters what OS, etc.

General rules: The more the better: More RAM, faster CPU etc.
Try to adjust the CL (Cas Latency) and the cycle lenght of your RAM for faster moving-around-data-in-RAM. This is especially beneficial if your running filters. Test some scenes to see if you really need some filters.
Close any programs that you don't need while encoding.
In windows 98, see if the DMA of your ultra-DMA disk is enabled.
Trimming trailers and end credits will also help increase quality and speed things up.
And learn some patience, the main goal is Quality, not speed. :D

The system is :

Duron 700@933Mhz
VIA KT7A-R mobo
384 MB Crucial PC133-CL2 RAM (runnng@133Mhz-CL2 and most agressive settings)
OS : Win98SE

I am patient but,for example i need like 5 hours of encoding for a 42 minute VHS to Divx5.02 2-pass conversion at 704x576 2000 bitrate (the divx ends up with 250 kbps bitrate) I'm mostly using light filters like 2 crop filters,the regular deinterlace of virtualdub,and one cleaner the Dynamic Noise Reduction MMX.It converts at the rate of 7-8 frames/second.So its really testing my patience :(

That brings me to a thing - I didn't know lowering the timings was so beneficial...I thought speed increases were obtained through a higher FSB? I currently have my 1700+ @ a 166 FSB and I have my ram running at 6-3-3-2 right now (its pc2700 ram)

Would I see a speed increase if I lowered it back to 133 but then turned the the timings to a more aggressive state like 5-2-2-2 (its crucial ram ;) I'd see if I could push it faster but I'd have to see tests)?

Sorry, limited time for me to reply, but I think I read something about deinterlacing (or was it IVTC ???) that really slows down everything.

Search the forum on that please.
