Wrong mp2 to mp3 conversion

Newbie question of day: the mp2 extension is used both for MPEG-1 Layer 2 and for MPEG-2 Multichannel audio files ?

If so, does BeSweet recognize the right type of mp2 if I ask it to convert a mp2 file into mp3 ?

BeSweet recognizes the filetype according to the info inside the file, the extension could even be mp3 while the file is mpeg-2 layer2.

I had this doubt because I converted a stereo mp2 file stereo into mp3, and BeSweet used AZID for this task.
I thought that Azid was necessary only to downmix multichannel files (like AC3), so I supposed that BeSweet didn't recognize my input file.
