XviD -> VCD: Strange sync problems

I have an 85 minute audio file (MP2) and an 85 minute video file (M1V). When I multiplex the two and play the result in Windows Media Player (or in my DVD player when I burn a VCD of it), the sound is not in sync with the video.

Sometimes the sound is ahead of the video, sometimes behind, and sometimes in sync. In the beginning of the movie the sound comes first, then it's in sync, then it comes too late and even later it's back in sync again.

Did I do anything wrong during conversion? I used TMPG to convert the Xvid file to MPG and then de-multiplexed it to get a M1V, and saved the sound to WAV (using Vdub) and then converted that to MP2.

What did I miss?

Why did you encode the XViD into VCD, then demultiplexed and then encoded the audio into WAV ????

You should try it another way : At first extract the audio as WAV with Virtual DUB! Compress it in an mp3 file and multiplex it.
( Or encode the XViD + the WAV )

BUT: You'll get problems if the audio is 48KHz or something non-standart!

What is this audio file? kbs? KHz? format?

some people do things differently than others; when i convert a dvd thru tmpgenc, i never let it touch the audio, why? cause i know it will only slow down the encoding time (tmpgenc slow enough as it is), and it's *.mp2 not *.mp3 (typo) for (s)vcd.

First make sure in your VFAPI plugins your DirectShow Multimedia File Reader is given a priority of 3, AVI2(OpenDML)File Reader is at 1, BMP/PPM/TGA/JPG File Reader at -2, DVD2AVI Project File Reader 1.77.3 at -2, TMPGEnc Project File Reader 2.512 at -2, all others should be set at 0. Now under the Audio engine tab, I use the built-in engine for MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, for III I use Lame as my external encoder.

I start the project wizard and choose NTSC Film to create a (S)VCD, click next and browse for video file and as you know this will fill both window fields for video/audio. Clcik next, other settings, in the advance tab click in the 'Video arrange Method' and choose Full screen (keep aspect ratio), then below check 'Ghost reduction, 'Noise Reduction', 'Sharpen edge', and 'Simple color correction'. Click next, choose CD-R 80min (VCD/SVCD)(Yes it will be larger then your standard CD, but we'll get to that later), click next chose your output directory and let it go.

Once the project is done, open TMPGEnc, MPEG tools, merge&cut, either choose, 'MPEG-1 VideoCD' for VCD or MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR) for SVCD, then double-click on file, click on { Open or Left Curly Brace, then move slider to 59mins(remember the exact time element and write it down), then click on the } Close or Right Curly Brace, browse your output directory then hit run. This setting will burn to the max on the 1st 80min CD, Nero will interpret this as being 78mins. I tried 60mins but Nero sees it as a 80min file and whats to overburn. Now do this one more time for the second CD, howevr this time without hitting the left brace you first slide the bar to 59mins(or more exactly whatever time element you wrote down before) then click on the your left brace, then move slider to the very end or another 59mins which ever comes 1st, click on the right brace, browse your output directory, click run.

You should now have to compliant (S)VCD's ready to burn using nero. I can't guarantee this will work for you, because all systems behave differently. But through trial and error this is what works for me.
