View Full Version : Noise via SVHS
dar1us

I am getting noise when capturing via S-VHS. It has always been noisy, a diagonal wave noise. I am wondering where it is from, I am assuming that it is not cable internal interfearence because it is a 1m IXOS S-VHS, hardly low grade. Could it be from the box itself, is there anything I can do to reduce it (not post-processing). Possibly from the card.
I will make a sample of the noise and post it. Just wanted people to be aware of the problem. When using composite on the card (MSI TV@nywhere), it is completly noise free. Captured with iUVCR and Huffyuv.

hi dar1us,
just cought your post (ben really busy w/ things like pc crashes
all weekend and other things) I've ben trying to destract myself
by comming to these forums, but.. anyways..
can you post a pic and maybe (even better) a 5 to 10 frames ??
I've done this, and it comes out pretty good at 10MB if you
compress it w/ winRAR. Be sure to select:
[x] Creat solid archive
[x] Use multimedia compression
as the above will really compress smaller (vs. winzip's)
* Just open in vdub as usual, and find a good solid color where
..the lines (usually black, but MUCH more noticalbe w/ VHS source)
* in the time-line windows, highlight the area you want to saveAs
..and saveAs something like noise.avi
* then, under winRAR, compress it (above) and post it.
I have a hunch you are suffering the same thing I have ben (and
many others here and there) but you are only just beginning to
realize it (or not) maybe you ignore it (as I) and NOW, you want
to do something about it (as I)
In my quest for eliminating Noise in my source (VHS mostly) I have
exhausted myself on this endeavor. In the end, it's usually an
external box (ADVC-100) that will give you 100% Noise-FREE captures.
Yes, unfortunately, it's $$$ pricey.. but worth it.
So far, to date, I have not won the battle. However, I am at this
time, testing a NEW capture card, Osprey-210 (@ $165)
at www.dvdirect.com
This card (so far) seems to be Noiseless but I don't know. I'm
testing it (but my other pc's ben crashing due to something i think,
so it's ben keeping me from my original plans for this weekend)
Just to note, I need a spare (analog) capture card in addition to my
DV card.
If you're interested in my results w/ this new card, I'll keep you
updated ??
I've also posted samples clips (I do this regularly) if you want to
see some clips - - but you're probably not interested, so I'll leave
that up to you to decide.
.
.
In any case, it doesn't hurt to research (till you've exhausted
yourself (as I) ) to see where the noise is comming from.
I do have my own theories (they change from time to time, based on
my observations and new findings and things)
* it's the TV-Tuner chip built-inside the device
* or, the MotherBoard and Card don't get along very well, and as
..a result, you see some Noise
* other factors you already know (I'll spare you all of them)
Just between you an I, when you do get sick of it, the ADVC will win
your heart - hands down! JMO.
Good luck, in any case.

Dont worry, I know capturing and capture hardware (i'd like to think:)), this is just a new problem. I feel it is making the encoding pass less accurate as there is permenant movement. It is a specific type of noise so I hoped there may be specific insight. I'll do a sample later tonite.
I think it is a noise crawl, I am looking at combs designed especially.
Promise I will get that sample done!

hay dar1us..
ben still waiting for that (those) sample pics (and maybe .avi)
I'm dying to see if you are suffering from the same thing I am.
I've ben messing around the last few days w/ VHS sources and my
varous cards. I'm (again) also attempting to play w/ a combination
of equipment I have ie, TBC-100 (not the TBC-1000) and mix and match
different components.
I REALLY like the Osprey-210's final .AVI quality. It really knocks
my socks off - - all except for the Line Noise it produces.
The video that it captures (EVEN from VHS sources) is always clean and
stable w/out wobble/wiggles and espcially at the top, where most other
cards ( even my DC10+ ) like to distor/wiggle the video up to 24 pixels.
The Osprey-210 is clean in this area (xcept the Line Noise)
If I can figure out HOW to setup my card (and combo) to capture w/out
these issues, THIS WOULD BE THE CARD FOR SURE!!
But, in the mean time, it's Filter-City for us all - - RATS!!
Unfortunately, I can't seem to do better than the BTYUV mode (though
it's quite good quality) I was hopping to get 24BIT RGB or 32BIT..
but my card grinds w/ BUFFER overflows.. sky-rockets to the max of 50.
So, I haven't quite figured out yet, what is causing this. I'm using
AVI_IO because this app gives me the least FRAME drops over vdub..
though vdub allows me to capture in YV12 mode (and w/out FRAME drops,
as tested minimally tested) Anyways.. back to YOUR thread..
The ADVC-100 is ok, but not recommended for VHS (IMO) For all every
thing else, it's perfect on it's own.. especially the filesize advantages.
I think I have just about every box there is.. or at least most populars..
* JVC S-VHS HR-S391OU. only use S-Video for max. quality reproduction
* SIMA SCC .. .. .. .. great for some de-noise'ing
* SIMA SEC-CM .. .. .. great color enhancer
* TBC-100 .. .. .. ... great for for re-syncs and video quaity, more..
* and a few other little gizmos.. .. ..
Funny how I just realized that you are using the MSI TV@NYwhere. I was
debating this card cause of it's 10bit capture quality over the 8bit
of Osprey-210, but soon realized that those two (so far) doesn't show
much difference anyways, (pending source and quality mind you) I was
only able to view one sample clip from someone, but that clip was not
the best (IMO) Anyways.. for now, the 8bit vs. 10bit is a mute issue.
Noise is the issue here !! Lets figure out how to get rid of
it, ahh ??
Please see if you can U/L those pics/.avi's for us all to see.
See you around pal.

wotef,
From dar1us’ description this sounds like interference, not color crosstalk. I don’t think a comb filter will help.
unless he posts back, we may never know :o

peach smoother ? where is it? im in filter city big time! my leadtek winfast tv 2000/xp deluxe is adding horizontial lines across the image that are not in the cable here. (analog cable) and i have not found the source... the a/v is a little less but still noticable. im not sure what the source is.. could be where its at in the machine or the mb or many different things..
I think that the Noise is attributed by a crystal (timing device) built into
these cards. Or, it's a combination of motherboard and card and chipset etc.
It's very funny though. I have gone through MANY capture cards, and
on two/three do not exhibit ANY noise:
* DC10+
* ADVC-100
* DAZZLE DVC I/II (USB and PCI) (based on memory of 2 years ago)
All my other cards produce this Noise at one level to another, off the
top of my head are:
* ati-tv wonder
* ati all in wonder
* ati rage fury pro (AGP)
* pcpvr (i/o magic) (has pinnacle logo on it)
* wintv-go
* osprey-210
* a few others I may have crossed path with
However, I think I may have a working solution to my analog capture
card Noise, but I'll hold off till we hear from dar1us.. and
maybe post some pics of his noisey source. We'd all love to see if
we are all in tune to this noise issue.
Or, perhaps he has found a solution after all.. in the form of another
card or filter technique. Or, he's chil'en out.

btw. i strongly believe your problems with noise are from mobo/cpu or other hardware........
i'm on intel stuff and bt8x8 card has virttually no noise (except fro tha one that is on the signal anyway.....ie. no noise is sumerimposed on top of the signal like in your case...)
infact i know exactly why am i sticking to intel (the other issue is hardware compatibility....and third (perhaps) software compatibility...)

the reason im on amd is price. im a college student.. who has not made his millions yet :-)
i can play 200 bucks for amd md and cpu and get the same speed as paying about 500-1000 bucks for intel. and im sure there has to be a good amd mb out there that does not introduce noise... im thinking about testing my card im my friends gigabyte board... its stable as a rock and has no problems with any thing... we have not tested a captureing board in it yet.
i4004,
sure, ..of course :)
It's the CONEXANT Fusion 878A
There are several numbers beneath it, and is very similar to TWO
other cards, but in each card, the numbers are always higher, like
every year their's a change or something - - you know what i mean ;)
@i4004,
Ok, as far as the Noise go. I understand your point to a degree.
But, how do you explain that my DC10+ is completely NOISE'less ??
(not tomention my ADVC-100)
When I put just the Osprey-210 card in and capture directly from it,
the noise is overwhelming.. especially when you hook up to a VCR.
The Noise is SERIOUS.
Note, I'd be very interested to see how the Pinnacle's PCTV card
holds up in a system - - especially when hooked up to a VCR !!
Another Note.. if anyone whats to do testings up against footage
being captured from Satellite, Channel 100 would be a good
testing choice.. w/ repeats of everything, every 15 minutes.
Another testing platform (for VHS source) would be any movie of choice,
and use THAT tape (store bought for maximum thrust) and NTSC, of course ;)
But, I'm will continue to be baffled w/ the DC10+ vs. any other card
issues in an AMD mother setting.
I have another motherboard, as I've stated (possibly in antoher thread)
that I could test my cards in. I just have to find time to set it up
and get everything working. Board is a BioStar make.
Well, that's all I have at this time.

im looking at the ADVC-1394 . it seems to do everything the ADVC-100 does besides do dv to analog. and all i really want is analog to dv from multiple sources. and i might even sell my winfast tv but the radio and tv function is nice... maybe ill put it in my GF machine that im going to build soon.
I just wanted to make a correction, before I get hammered.. So, I
apploigies to those that I may have already confused :)
When I put just the Osprey-210 card in and capture directly from it,
the noise is overwhelming.. especially when you hook up to a VCR.
The Noise is SERIOUS.
I should have said that you can notice minor noise w/ source that
are from Satellite (if you look real hard) and that also includes
my DV cam, when I record from Satellite onto miniDV tapes.
And, FINALLY.. from my VCR, the noise is very obvious (LOUD)
Ok, now.. from a newbie point of view, you wont see the noise that
I'm talking about. But, after a while, when you build up knowledge
and techniques, you'll soon begin to notice a few things about your
source.
Remember, these noise that we are talking about (i'm assuming here)
are Line Noise or Interferences causing strange Lines
going across (from left to right) and can be slightly black or
gray in color. If viewed on a BLUE screen (VCR) you'll see these
Line Noise as black Horizontal lines going accross your screen.
Otherwise, I'm talking about MY given capture card noise issues.
Strickly Theory here..
I beleive that the reason why many people didn't realize this noise
issue (till now) is because the majority of you all (including myself)
always used some form of filtering in our encodes, and overlooked this
issue. It was our filtering that excluded us from knowing the trueth.
..all until recently. Though I've known for a year or so, and fought
many times w/ it. I've even posted a long thread on this issue, over
on vcdhelp and even thought I had the answere once or twice back then.
Only now, some are beginning to wake up w/ this noise issue. And, when
one person hollars, a few draw into, and hear. some may even verify
out of curiosity, and low and behold, discover THEY TOO, have this
noise issue. "the sleepers have awaken.." Anyways.. now that more
and more are becomming aware, it's time to find out WHAT EXACTLY is
causing this "noises", and either figure out a way to fix it or overcome
it.. even if it means to change hardware and/or devices (motherboards
etc) It was suggested that it could be the motherboard. I think
that this could be correct. But only a actual experiment will we be
sure. I have a BIOSTAR motherboard I purchased many months ago.
Maybe it's time I put this mother together and experiment w/ my cards!!
I said I've posted this in another thread elsewhere. If its better
for me to post there, I will (and provide link to this thread)
Maybe I've become too envolved here on dar1us's thread ??
hmm.. well, I won't say anymore on this then, just in case i over steped here. I'll try and find the link to that thread I was talking
about earlier.
Well, that's all I have for now.. have a good evening all.

if you still have that ZR series cam then that is the problem. you will always get noise from them. Its just the overall quality of the camera is an entry level camera. i have one also and when compared to a GOOD sony HI8 and a GL1 or GL2 then there is little to no noise.

>i can play 200 bucks for amd md and cpu and get the same speed as paying about 500-1000 bucks for intel.
hmmm...i believe you're mistaking.....price difference(s) are not that big at all!
sure,amd is cheaper,but....well,it's cheap too.(hehe)
i have payed pretty small bucks for my intel system....not top notch and already outdated, but serves me well (if it can play 768x576 divx and still spare some cpu time, then it's good enough for me)
also..you can always wait for month or two for intel to drop the prices (hehe)
that way you'll get same price as amd stuff and better performance....
(and i'm quite sure it won't overheat overnight..hehe)
there's also that 400 vs. 800MHz FSB issue,so i would choose P4 any time over the amd (i laugh at the company that marks their cpu's as the number relative to some other mfr (intel) ..."2800+"......come on....really.......)
[osprey card]
>It's the CONEXANT Fusion 878A
hmm,isn't it overpriced then?how much , 100,200$?
recently i saw the ad on the "real networks" web (yes,i go there too..hehe) and it was pricey..(if i remember...hm...let me see if browser cached it........yeap, 199$.....YAIKS!
http://www.realnetworks.com/products/osprey210/features.html )..
such cards cost as lil as 30$ over here (and i don't need osprey to get decent printed circuit board for bt8x8 chipset....all bt8x8 cards have they same capturing engine.(no,they didn't changed anything in years..hehe)...you only toy with the drivers to get the best outof them...and then they just fly.....)
>But, how do you explain that my DC10+ is completely NOISE'less ??
it found the sweet spot for amd?(hehe)
perhaps more attention to proper grounding/shielding was made on that card....as oppposed to cheaper ones.......
>Note, I'd be very interested to see how the Pinnacle's PCTV card
holds up in a system - - especially when hooked up to a VCR !!
i don't have pinnacle (i hear it exhibits less noise than for example aver tv on the same amd system...),i have cheap "pixelview" PCI card and no interference noise at all.......(just to prove you it's NOT the card issue.....something else is causing you interference....like the rest of the PC.)
i have already posted many samples from which that's pretty visible...
no interference to speak about.VHS or not,it's the same thing......
(although VHS itself has more (especially chroma) noise than direct broadcast...but that's VHS' stuff, and not card's...that chroma noise is visible on vhs playback by tv too.....)
>and use THAT tape (store bought for maximum thrust) and NTSC, of course
i'm using THIS tapes and sometimes even SOME tapes, but probably "THAT's" better (LOL!)
you mean "That's" brand of tapes? i must admit i never saw that here, but tdk, philips (especially),basf and other did good for me (recently "sony CDe" series works pretty fine...)
>But, I'm will continue to be baffled w/ the DC10+ vs. any other card
issues in an AMD mother setting.
that card has hardware mjpeg too, right?
perhaps it has some noise prefilter built in so it cancels noise out before it reaches the mjpeg portion of hardware...(or as i said it only has better grounding/shield)
note that image looks softer and blurier if such pre-filter exists...
>I have another motherboard, as I've stated (possibly in antoher thread)
that I could test my cards in. I just have to find time to set it up
and get everything working. Board is a BioStar make.
to test ALL of the mentioned cards?
hmmm....you are persistent........and i'm just lucky to have the gear that goes along together well......
btw. on avs forums i have find some info on the guy that modifies the bt cards to make them better in this way we talk......he specialized in one brand only (aver or askey,i can't remember...) i don't have the link as it's not interesting to me,but search on avs forums yields results with his name mentioned frequently near the bt8x8 cards...
>It was our filtering that excluded us from knowing the trueth.
hmm?i always look at the video after it's captured...just to be sure it's captured at all....(heeh)
>I said I've posted this in another thread elsewhere. If its better

Maybe I've become too envolved here on dar1us's thread ??
hmm.. well, I won't say anymore on this then, just in case i over steped here. I'll try and find the link to that thread I was talking
about earlier.
hmm, why?nobody said anything against your contribution here.i believe hardware talk is needed as much as software/filtering talk...(if not more...)
yes, sure, provide the link......community needs the folks that had more than one card, and seems like you had quite a few..(hehe)
i have seen the hardware so good that it beats (at lores) some other hardware (at hi-res)...so anything is possible really....hardware should be discussed as we can't capture without it........
saying that we cannot conduct "proper tests" because we have different hardware/conditions is a nonsense in my view.......because we CAN judge what hardware is good and what not..(because by now we should know our sources, gear etc.)..
dvdrhelp (ex. vcdhelp) forums are good, but this one's better........
(although i have seen some dvdrhelp "articles" on capturing that made me puke....)
@SiliconSoul
so,you're getting the rather pricey advc gear while saving on the other components?
[>"the reason im on amd is price. im a college student.. who has not made his millions yet :-) "]
for the money it takes to buy advc100,i would buy new P4 mobo and decent P4 cpu (nothing more...i'm quite satisfied with the rest of the system....but encoding needs CPU power)....
as tests have proved, advc DV system cannot stack with bt8x8 on EITHER huffyuv or mjpeg(@"19")!
[although there are exceptions:there are folks that have trouble in getting the bt8x8 to work in proper way....sync issues etc. some of those folks still say bt8x8 offered them the best image quality...but the decent image with no lip sync is not worth that much...]

so your saying that the ADVC cards do not keep the audio in sync? cause that is one of the main features on there website.
so,you're getting the rather pricey advc gear while saving on the other components?
why not then i can put it in any machine.
also the ADVC 1394 is cheaper than the ADVC 100
ADVC is an internal card without dv to analog and the ADVC does from almost anything and back again.
i just want analog tv to DV or avi whateva.
you can always wait for month or two for intel to drop the prices (hehe)
why wait when u can have the same performance now at a cheaper price.
also i hating feeding the money to the devil. in all reality they could have like 50Ghz processors ( not that much but u know what i mean) right now but they don't cause they milk us for all the money we are worth. AMD is leveling the playing field by pushing intel to release these faster processor. same with MS they could have a OS without bugs but they don't cause it makes them more moeny when we have to update.

Sorry for my absense, lot of promises broken, hey... I had a lot of work to do. Finishing school this week, for ever... Then greater things.
I have the samples - they are taken from a 544x576 source, SKY|ONE on Sky Digital. There are 5 frames but they show the problem exactly, they are the exact frames captured, not resized, just cropped.
Hope it helps with an answer, I can see on the TV that there are similar effects, but these are blurred. I am comming to the conclusion that it is the satellite decoder. I have auctioned for another one (wish me luck).

@dar1us,
I have the same problem with my JVC HR-S7950 and my Pinnacle PCTV Rave (and even in my friend's Matrox) if I use the S-VHS output embedded in the SCART connector.
Using the S-VHS dedicated output there are no problems...
Obviously, the cause is the bad design of the secondary output of my VCR (which is, in my opinion, a very good VCR, with TBC and denoising filters)...
Lucio
Hi dar1us,
I finally got your sample clip including pics, while at work, but didn't
notice anthing. I then tried D/L'ing them again, here (home) and still
didn't notice anything. Till I re-adjusted my monitor (I had make some
minor adjustments yesterday) then I noticed your noise. So, I guess
people will see different things based on their monitor/graphics card,
i.e., my 20" monitor at work vs. my 15" here at home.
But, yes, I have similar noise too, but not exact, that I can tell
from yours. Anyways..
If you'd like, I can U/L a sample that I did some time ago last year,
that I kept in case I needed it again.. if you're curious that is.
But, your card is deffinately showing noise. Let me guess.. that the
noise is more pronouced during animation clips ?? or single color scenes
like blue (or your red squares) However, I think my card(s) show more
noise than yours :(
Have you made any progress w/ ideas ?
* like trying your card on another motherboard (different one) ?
* or even trying a different capture card all-to-gether ?
* trying a home recorded TV show on a Tape vs. store bought movie ?
..case those noise are macrovision related (talking to your cap card
..to say, "hay, i'm not suppose to be captured" or somethin.
* or something else ?
All my tests were based on store bought VHS movies, but I admit, I never
actually used a "recorded" taped I made, in any of my testings. So, this
brings me an interesting idea for other testings.. unless you've ben
their and done it already w/ same results ?
If you don't mind my asking some more questions..
Like, did you do a comparison w/ other devices besides your VCR to
measure the level of noise ?
* Like, your Cable box (if that is what you're using using)
* Satellite
* a Camcorder
* regular VCR vs. your S-VHS
FWIW, I have the JVC S-VHS HR-S3910U model.
Hope to hear from you soon.

The noise is not supposed to be there, it causes noise crawls on full frames.
It is samples from a Satellite box. I will test with my DVD player and see if I can get the same results. Shame I cant reproduce exactly the same colour for a decent comparison. I could author a DVD or SVCD, but it is hardly worth it.
I reccomended that you zoomed it, I did, 4 times, it is very easily visible on my 19" flatscreen and I can still see it easily on the screen I plug up when capturing (15" CRT convex).
The sample was from an animated scene (channel logo, kind of get your fave shows first on SKY|ONE)... It is easily viewabe on scenes of similar colour. It isn't red squares, just one shade of orange. Shame I didn't keep a whole frame. - Just found it in the recycle bin.

Hi dar1us, just made a quick test.
It seems it's an interference caused within your PC's case, e.g. from a cooler. The noise is also within the black & white areas.
However, flaXen's VHS filter helps. Pure VHS with default settings is yet pretty impressive. You can intense the result by using this filter chain:
exYUVDv by Simon Walters YUV splitting-->RGB
flaXen's VHS, default settings
Cm YUV Debug Dev by Simon Walters RGB-->YUV combining
Here(png) (http://people.freenet.de/TC.Xan/images/after.png) and here(avi] (http://people.freenet.de/TC.Xan/clips/after.avi) are the results. I resized them to 120x120 via nearest neighbour, this way you won't need to zoom.

The problem is eliminating the noise alltogether. Removing it is a loss of quality, for sure, you wont notice it that much mabe, but it would be much more ideal to remove all noise alltogether.
I thought it was maybe an error simply in SVHS transmission but I am comming to think it is the specific sat box, still havnn't tried my DVD player yet...
Get back later

if it is noise from fans that can be solved by turning off the fans and then testing ... that is if my machine does not overheat :-)

@ dar1us, :)
I know how you feel :( sucks big-time when you hit up against a wall.
I've ben their many times. That's why I went for the ADVC-100. I was
just plain tired of the loosing battle. Anyways..
I still believe that the culprit is the Motherboard !! I found some
clips that I did w/ my ATI-TV Wonder pci card, and they had NO NOISE.
Those clips were done w/ my old MSI K7T Pro2-A (MS-6330)
w/ an Athlon 900mhz T-Brd chip and 128mb ram.
I replaced it (due to a fried cpu, and motherboard because faulty due
to lightning, and no surge supression device) w/ my ECS K7S5A board,
which, as you already know, if PRONE to NOISE. Unfortunately, I also
upgraded my 2nd pc w/ the same ECS motherboard.. replace from my old
Intel TPII 233 Mhz cpu.
Here is how I see it, (as it was in my case) you have two choices:
A - you could try another motherboard brand, or
B - get the ADVC-100 and tell us all your "I should've gotten it a long
time ago" or "now I know what everyone's ben talking about" hehe..
I know it's a bit pricy. Cost me $299 last year. But, I have NO
regrets. I'm also one of those who confessed (see B)
I do have an interesting tid-bit though.. In my 2nd pc setup, I have
my Osprey-210. when I connect my S-VHS to it, and do capturing, it
is very noisey. But, when I pipe the S-VHS through my TBC-100, and
then through to my Osprey-210, no noise (that i can really see)
BUT, if I connect my Satellite to my TBC-100 and then to my Osprey-210,
I can see some noiticable noise. So, go figure !! I know, I know..
I have the ADVC-100 and all, but I still want to and do need to work
with Analog capturing. These, IMO, bring out the best true quality in
a video capture project, and I like to have an alternative to my
ADVC-100.
I don't know.. think about it though.
Good luck thus far.

You see it makes no difference which mobo/card I capture with, via S-VHS, the CX2881 onboard my MSITV@anywhere is noisarama. Grr I get this line noise via the Leadtek Cards (VIVO) with a SAA7108 on board. Here is a revisied sample set just incase people missed it last time.
I dont think it is the motherboard as it does the same on my second computer. I would try my DVDPlayer but I think the S-Video onboard that is knackered as it gives endless trouble when the other works fine. I am thinking of investing in a TVXP as I mentioned abouts the place, I cant really afford a ADVC as I am a lowely student and as I also mentioned, just got that new satellite system.
Here is the link to the new sample which I URGE you all to take a quick peep at, ZIP format. http://freespace.virgin.net/suizie.darrington/BadFrames.zip
Erm... Enjoy

@ dar1us..
Here is an idea for you to toy around w/ that might be something
ta keep you busy w/ for a while long, in hopes to resove your noisy
captures. I fogot to mention this last week, while I was playing
around w/ this myself (got the idea from reading an overclocking
article (though nothing to do w/ noise))
Now.., I've ben playing around w/ the clock settings in my BIOS.
My mobo doesn't have much room for this sort of playing around, but
I think it did do something to my Analog captures from my MAIN pc
and ATI-TV Wonder pci card. I haven't really tested w/ comparisons
(my pc is always crashing, and I loose track of things.. you know
what mean) But, I thought I'd mention this, just in case you hadn't
come accross it yet. So, give a lookseez on this ;)
One more thing I found, while browing for some new Movies (my Friday
rituals)... I came across some Surge protectors (cause I don't have
any as of yet) and while reading some of the boxes, I came accros
one that show a graph for Line Noise, showing the reduction in.
Anyways.. it was a feature that was included in one of their higher
end models. I was curious, but I didn't get it because I was not
ready, and was really just looking for some Movies to add to my lib.
Anyways.. might want to look into that also.
I did notice the pics. And, I also realize, that although you can't
make it out as clear through watching pics on your pc screen, you will
DEFFinately see them, once you author and burn them to cd and play
them on your DVD player / TV set. That's where you'll notice them
unfortunately. (well, you know this, but others here may not realize
this fact, so I was just making them aware of this for their sake)
Good luck thus far :)

What about your power supply? They can create all kinds of noise.

Grr I get this line noise via the Leadtek Cards (VIVO) with a SAA7108 on board.
so,it seems like you get the same noise with different capture device...
perhaps your new dvb receiver uses same chipset as the old one,and therefore has the same flaw.......
looking at the screenshots, the error is not so easy to spot until the image is blown pretty hard........
(ie. do you watch your video always zoomed 300% or so?hehe)
in the light of the discovery that another capture device is capturing the image in a same way (saa7108),i suggest you devote all of your atention to your dvb source....(i presume captuirng from other sources (vhs, analog PAL,etc.) doesn't have this flaw...?)
check here (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_2/dvd-benchmark-special-report-chroma-bug-4-2001.html) if thsi has similaritites to your case (i don't know if "CUE" looks like noise or is it static etc.)
have you contacted anyone else with sky dvb who has svhs capturing pretensions? in hdtv/dvb forum?
asked at your dvb provider?
seems like receiver is sending the signal that is splitted uncorrectly...(mpeg2 stream->luma,chroma) if you are absolutely sure capture device is ok..(and you have tried another one,so....)
and as i remember, composite works fine.......
