Presets???

It would be great if you could implement a preset support like in the Lame-Encoder (preset standard, etc.). Then we could make some presets to make this codec more userfriendly.

Presets simply don't work for video if you're aiming to get the best quality. What would be better would be seperate in-depth guides for different types of video giving you a baseline, from which you could make minor adjustments for the exact video you're encoding.

Really, I don't think there's any other way to get a good video encode other than having experience with the codec.

Yes, Perhaps you're right.

But I think the problem is, that everybody has is own settings, and people who don't want to test 10 hours to encode a movie don't know what to do.
There are a lot people who ask, which are the best settings and somebody sais "Use the search-button". But nowhere you can find this settings. Everybody has other settings, I think we should test together somme settings and then they can be set to the default-settings.

There is no guide with good settings. Iago's guide was very good, but now it's a little bit outdated.

Yes, and I would call it the opposite of "in-depth".

The problem is I don't think there's an in-depth anything for the recent versions of xvid right now. Pretty much all knowledge about the recent versions is scattered around this forum. I guess they're still justified in still saying that xvid exists only for testing purposes, since at the rate it's progressing it's hard enough just to keep up and keep track of what features aren't working at the moment and what features have now been fixed or improved.

Yes, but we could update the "perfect" settings.
I'll try to start a Thread in which are good settings for the newest XviD-Codec, but I need your help and assistance.

I'd be glad to help. In fact I was just thinking about that because I recently (i.e. yesterday) found some perfect settings for an anime I'm encoding, through endless trial and error.

IMHO, there's not so much in XviD-settings that you'd have to change depending on content; it's more of a problem to determin which settings are good for what bitrate. Also the fast development of XviD in conjunction with our evolving understanding of settings has caused some confusion - what we had thought was a good setting in the beginning turned out not to be later (like modulated quantizers).

If you look at the devel-list, presets are definitely a thing we'll see in a future version.

presets would be interesting since i'm sure you xvid developers have settings for some commom movies (eg. the matrix) that cannot be beaten by anyone else :)
