Best way to capture VHS via tv2000xp..

Could someone please point in me ther right direction to how to capture VHS -> my tv2000xp (TV tuner card) via the composite connection?

Is the CD software good enough?
I tried using it, but found the file sizes generated were massive!

Well, it depends what compression you use. It's good that they are big, if you want to have smaller files you have to compress more = loss of quality.

uncompressed? would take up way too much space.. :(

If Huffyuv is too big just use a MJPEG codec of your choice.
Do not choose DivX for the reasons that are in the FAQ.

Premiere should not have problems with MJPEG :) .

uncompressed = waste of space
huffyuv = excellent choice, if you have large disc (30 - 40GB per hour)
MJPEG = good choice, lossy codec with compression of approx 1:10 (5 - 15 GB per hour)
DIVX = forget it!. It destroys most of the image while capturing and it is not suitable to use it for cutting after capturing.

Capturing PAL with 640x480 will destroy the image.
I recommend capturing in 7**x576.
7** = 704 / 720 / 768

the hor-rez depend on, what you want to do with your video.
If you want to make a DVD, I would take 720 or 704, because you don't need to resize.
If you want do make DivX without resize, take 768.
If you are planning to make a SVCD the hor. rez doesn't really matter.

well ive got it working fine with the CD software.
just playing around with it atm.
about 2 mins of 640x480 HuffYUV took about 500mb. (no audio yet)
I divX'd it with Vdub (around 700kbps), only used 11.5mb and was pretty good quality.

That sound about right???

Trying to capture in VirtualDub+VCR now, using thd doom9 guide. and im having a bit of trouble.
the overlay preview thingy looks a bit weird.. any ideas?

Everything that i pick, i can click 'apply' but if i click 'ok' I get a "unsupported video format" message.

Try to change the TV-Standard to PAL

If you've installed the BtWinCap-Driver, reinstall it, but select PAL as default TV-standard within the setup.

well.
i initially tried to change to PAL. (had to do this for the CD software) but i cant find any options in VirtualDub or VirtualDub+VCR....

am i just blind???

damnit.
i found the correct drivers to install and picked PAL etc. But it BSOD'd during the install.

This happened last time whilst i was installing the standard tv200xp drivers. Guess its format time again :( :( :( :(

I was BSOD like no tomorrow with the installation of the drivers as well, but this worked for me:

1. uninstall regular drivers and reboot
2. run the btinstall thing and use it to uninstall, reboot
3. run btinstall and actually install the bt filter make sure you choose a tuner etc.

This should work... Don't let windows install the card which no longer has drivers between steps though. Also, if you do this it is likely your bundled software will no longer work, since it's designed to work with bundled drivers, but you can use virtualdub vcr etc at full resolution which is sweet... Hope that helps.
