I want to learn Avisynth but it seems like I need a starting place to learn it. What is the best way to start learning how to use Avisynth.

You can use Gordian Knot for setting up your Avisynth files. Read a bit of the documentation mentioned above and try to understand how it works. After a while you can manually set up an avisynth file. And you can always find help here at the forum.
