Codec list empty

Hello again. (Yea, I posted a while back)

When I attempt to encode an image sequence using Quake Video Maker the list from which to chose what codec to use is completely empty, apart from "Whole Frames (Uncompressed)". I do not believe that this is specifically related to QVM, since I've encountered the same problem with another application - namely a bmp2avi program by Alexander the russian guy.

I've talked to the maker of QVM and he (I think) first claimed that it had something to do with Windows XP HE's API for video compression not working on a system with Home Edition, and suggested I switched to XP Pro. Then he tried QVM on a localized HE system and got the full list of codecs installed on that system to show up. Obviously, then, it works on a HE system. It's just that it doesn't work on mine.

I do not encounter this problem when using for example VirtualDub, Nandub, Adobe Premiere, etc. and have been completely unable to find any solution to it on the net. My guess, and it is a guess, is that QVM doesn't look for installed codecs in the right place, or that my installed codecs aren't properly registered. But if they aren't, how come VDub and Premiere finds them?

In the hope that some of the knowledgable guys frequenting this forum know what causes the problem I thus present the above.

I'm running Win XP HE localized (swedish) version, SP1

I've had this thing happen before in Windows XP. I think at the time, I did a reformat, but later learnt that its a bug in XP. Apparently theres a registry? setting that defines the list of codecs that you can use, and if one of the values is blank, it causes the list to be totally blank. I just wish I could remember where the list is and how you fix it.

Vladdy: That is basically what the creator of QVM sais as well. Well maybe not a bug exactly, but lack of support on the part of Win XP HE. But then again, he managed to get it to work on a HE system without having to do anything (at least he didn't say he did anything special). I'll pump him for more info I think.

WorldBook: Thanks for the info. I searched the forum before posting my questions, and I found that thread as well and did what it suggested. Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it I suppose) I found no empty registry keys, so it was a dead end as far as I could make out.
And, still, why does it work with VirtualDub but not with QVM? I have never had any problem with VirtualDub.

The reason I posted here at all was because the guy who made QVM said he couldn't help me, but I'm starting to think that he's the one who can after all.
