removing commercials from and compresing captured file

i am using TMPGEnc 2.5 free version to remove commercials and reduce the size of that 70's show episode i captured (mpeg1). the problems i am having are, no sound in the output file or the program stops responding half way through the process. is there another program out there that is good at what i am trying to do? or am i doing something wrong?

try using another program to cut/join parts of it. you can find a brief list of mpeg cutters here
