I know how picky you guys are about reading faq's and all posts before posting, and Ive done that best I can, and so far havn't made sense out of very much of it.

Ive been using dvd2svcd for over a year now for converting some of my coulumbia house dvd's to svcd. Now im recently purchased a new computer and have a capture card I want to convert some of my old vhs tapes to svcd as well.

Ive read the faq and some of the posts but find them to be very vauge and lead you around in circles. Maybe its just me.

What Im looking for is the best settings to input into vdubmod to capture high quality avi's (size doesn't matter) Then I take the avi's and load them into dvd2svcd and run it through the ringer there to get my end product.

Hopefully you can help me out with some resolution settings and filters and framerate and whatever else there may be. Even if you dont want to tell me if you could point me to a post that already explains this that would be great too. Or if you even think Im capturing my vhs's the wrong way and should try something else I would appreciate any input.

I have a
P4 2.8 gig
2gig of pc2100 memory in dual channal
p4g9x asus mobo
ati all in wonder radeon 9700 pro video
audigy 2 platnum sound
180 gig of harddrive space
and a shitload of time.

I currently use the huffyavi codec

I don't know which TV-Standard is common in Canada...

short answer:
NTSC : aaa*480pixels @ 29,97fps (aaa=720/704/640)
PAL : bbb*576pixels @ 25,00fps (bbb= 768/720/704)

Canada uses NTSC. We share a common power grid with the US so it makes perfect sense. NTSC runs at 29.97fps (or 59.94 fields per second) because North America's power grid alternates the current at 59.94hz, whereas PAL runs at 25fps (or 50 fields per socond) because the power grid in Europe runs AC at 50hz. Letting the power grid dictate the framrate and calculating the appripriate vertical resolution available for the bandwidth was the simplest method of controlling theframerate, and basically why the two formats developed. I'm certain that if both North America's and Europe's power systems had been built to run at the same hz then we wouldn't have competing video standards, except the French would probably still have insisted on making Secam </random cheap shot at the French>

how did you americans managed to be "59,94" back in the early part of the 20th century?
50hz is ok,60hz is ok,but you had such precision on mechanical stuff in the beginning of the century ?(when AC was introduced by tesla)
i mean,how fast is the generator shaft spinning to give you "59,94"hz...huh?

hmm,i don't really buy that stuff....do you have precise frequency meter to tell us exact number of usa mains?
but the frameratte can as well be 59,94,as it can be any number that the vertical oscialtor is set to work on by vsync signals.....
i agree that these numbers dictated the framerate (or better field rates),but they looked ofr simplicity in those days...and they did fine.......

I think you will find monochrome was broadcast at 30fps and modified to the current 29.97fps to make room for color information. The web page explains it all. As for mains frequency, the US has the most stable frequency available anywhere at 60.00Hz. The 59.94 was the result of the timing change for NTSC color and nothing to do with power mains frequency.:)

Since I had no knowledge about the canadian power-grid frequency, I could not estimate its TV-standard.

All other points, you've counted I'm already knowing.

btw. I'm living in a PAL-Country and having a slight tendency to dislike NTSC... But thats an other story...

yes,that's the point i was suggesting(but am not ntsc man to know exactly..nor i have great interest in ntsc)!
thanks for helping out...as i knew that 59,94 is a silly frequency for the mains to be on!and as i said tv can be on any frequency it chooses(because RF signal is steering the tv-set deflection)!
