OK I know about copyright infringement and stuff but I figure that I paid good money for my dvd albeit on the street while on holiday in taiwan that I should be allowed to back it up. Anyways I'm not sure if anyone else has realised but Cheap street DVD's are really hard to backup as an SVCD so here's an overview of problems I encountered and solutions i used incase anyone has these problems elsewhere with either street dvd's or foreign dvd's.

1. For some reason my DVD drive couldn't pick up any info on vob files. I opened the Video_TS folder and found the vob files there but they were all 0kb and hence wouldnt rip (even with DVD2SVCD's ripping tools (Cant explain it not going to try).

Fixed by using a small program called DVD Decrypter (maybe an option to add support for that in next revision of DVD2SVCD?). This seemed to rip the vob files onto my Hard drive and allow me to have vob files that didnt show a 0kb file size.

2. NTSC... I live in australia so problems associated with NTSC are fairly new to me so I converted the final product to PAL.

First time round I had to deinterlace it to improve the final quality of the video. But I had an audio problem (not sure if it was associated with the NTSC or the RIP) where all the voices were deep and slow.

Second time creating I selected force film to "on" as this was a solution tried by someone else that I found in this forum which seemed to work fine.

This helped me create a working copy but I wasnt very happy with the quality. I normally use a single pass VBR encode but in this case had to use 4 pass. I'm not sure why because its not a hugely fast moving movie (Single pass is ok for most movies though can occasionally create enormous file sizes or poor quality encodes. The advantage is that you can save about 10 hours on slow pc's). 19 hours later hey presto and nice near perfect backup!

I know this forum is for asking for help but I hope some of these solutions can help people who search before asking. Besides its about time i gave back to a forum that has helped me so much.
