I was very pleased today when I found that Gordian Knot is occupying number 10 spot in the recent download chart at SF! :)
P.S. @doom9 I think if SF survives from 0.28 release then we don't have to worry about bandwidth issue there anymore

since the download traffic definetly is an indicator for your good work you did on gknot 0.28, people really seem to appreciate the good work you did here on this project, congrats and keep the things going :)

@len0x: come the final you'll soon be number one. Who needs jboss? ;) (of corse, nothing against it, it's a nice app but it just doesn't have the same sex appeal).

I think if Doom9 just provide links to SF instead of placing binaries on the main site, then we might :)

more that 17,000 downloads during first day of release!
Very impressive :)

That's impressive. I noticed that hits to the website went up from ~200 a day to well over 2000 a day :)
Still havn't toppled eMule yet though :(

emule had months or years as a headstart.. but their release binary is so small it's only a matter of time. Though, at some point sf might notice that the packs are not entirely composed of GPL software. I don't know sf's policy regarding this but some software is even commercial (divx3/5).
Also, am I the only one still getting rather meager download rates? Ok, it's 10 times as much as the day it was released but my line could do much more than what I'm getting.

Not quite true im afraid the number 2 slot is a daily download monitor so the fact emule had a head start doesn't matter, and the downloaded are counted by number of downloads not size so the fact emule is small won't effect the results either.

ahh... then is there a list sorted by traffic? I haven't found any so far.

Ok today we finally hit the number 1 download spot on sf.net, well be did on the 27th anyway. Unfortunatly no stats for any project were counted on the 26th which my guess is would have been the best day for downloads.

wow 40000 downloads on sunday, that should be around 300 Gb traffic on a single day... :D

Hmm thinking about this they may not be totally unrelated perhaps we broke sf.net :)

Number one for at least two days...
But the traffic can be definitely a problem on the release days, so
for the future we should do the following:
1) Upload new release at least 12 hours before activating it - this will ensure that all the mirrors have it.
2) Always provide updates from previous versions of both rippack & codecpack

I think GKnot is the only piece of software on SourceForge that doesn’t have a Source bundle to download with each Release. Any chance in the future that the source is made easily available for those who don’t know how to setup a CVS connection, or use the Web based CVS???
Cheers! :)

I think we can do that, but I just wonder what for you you need the sources without setting up CVS ?

I believe Open Source is more then just developing “free” software, it’s about being open with information and sharing the solution to difficult problems. I think most people who download OS source do it to learn from the code. E.g. I’ve looked at MPUcoder’s homepage, and the source code to vStrip to learn how to write a VB IFO file parse. If it wasn’t for this open information I would never have been able to figure it out by myself, as I don’t have the time or energy to reverse engineer a closed source specification.
The reason I would like the GKnot source to be easily downloadable is twofold, 1. Like you said it should be easy to do, as you need the entire source in one place at one time to do a compile, why not just do a Zip after the compile? 2. For those who would like to learn from the source, and don’t know how to setup CVS or spent hours downloading each CVS file manually from the Web based CVS.
There’s also no point being OS and then trying to make it difficult for people to get the source. Most people might only download it to have a quick look; others might study the code to see how it all works. I fall into the latter as I would like to learn how it all works.
Ultimately sharing the information will lead to a more educated community, which will lead to better feedback from more of its members. There’s even a small chance that more people might realise just how time consuming and difficult it is to write such a good application.
no sign of high numbers whatsoever... I wonder where those numbers gone...

Anonymous cvs takes no time at all to learn. Besides you don't need to learn it just type the stuff on the sourceforge cvs pages and your done. The difficult bit is the full write support cvs but as you can't use even if you want to its not an issue.
DaveEL
(just to save you a quick search cvs can be downloaded at http://www.cvshome.org/)

Agree, especially for programmer (who wants to look at the code apart from him anyway?) :)
