i have many classic movie in divx/xvid format and new DVD burner :) and little problem with avi - mpeg2 conversion. How correct resize avi/divx files to DVD 720x576 ?
i use Nandub, CCE 2.50, AVS 2.07, DVDMaestro and FitCD (resize calculator) and after encoding, all movies looks on my panorama TV no good - picture is squeezed.

example:
- source movie: 512x288 - aspect ratio 1.77

- FitCD calculation:
LanczosResize(720,448,3,0,506,288) - aspect ratio 1.60 !!!
AddBorders(0,64,0,64)
Trim(0,135746).FadeOut(150)

- i try 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio's settings in CCE and 16:9 and 4:3 in Maestro (combination)

terminal effect - on 16:9 (wide) screen picture is squeezed, looks good only on 4:3 screen :(

uff - i'm now very helpless and need your suggestion how correct calculation resize to my movies looks good on 16:9 TV.

THX for help

i'm not an expert... but there's one thing i believe to be obvious here my friend... your souce is 16:9... all you have to do is resize to 720*576 if it is really PAL... (are you sure its pal... see frame rate for this), and then while encoding use the flag 16:9... this way he video will be worked right by the dvd player.

Regarding your problem with the TVs... well TVs have the option to zoom or not... in case you have 4:3 TV the dvd player will add the back border if you choose your output as being a 4:3 display... in your 16:9 tv you also need to select on the dvd player that your display is 16:9. :)

If you ratehr have a good and auto effect on the 4:3 tv... then you could just add the borders in avisynth to make the movie 4:3 and when encoding in cce choose the flag 4:3... then it'll be good on TV 4:3 by default... but if your TV is 16:9 it'll look wird if you choose to zoom or strech... so jyst leave the setting in the 16:9 TV as being input 4:3 video.

Sorry for this weird english of mine... he he he...hope this helps you in any way.

Take care,
