Encoding Cartoons (Family Guy)

I know this has probably been asked before, but my searches haven't turned up much.

What's the best encoder for DVD rips of The Simpsons or Family Guy? I'm ripping off a PAL DVD. What AviSynth settings should I use, and what's the best postprocessing to use?

Is there a guide somewhere for these questions?

Search the forums for threads in which the encoding of anime is discussed.
That should give you an idea on how to deal with cartoon sources (especially regarding the preferred filters).

As for the "best encoder" stuff...trust me: If I said right now "Codec A will give you the best results", at least 10 people would pop up out of nowhere and flame me for not recommanding Codec B. And maybe they would be right for this special case. Just test it for yourself.

I encode Family Guy from a MPEG source. I use Helix Producer with these settings:

300kbps (including a 32kbps VOICE stream) at 24 FPS.

the output is like 47MB, with great quality.

Give it a try :)

Codec C better than RealVideo 9
XviD better than Codec C so....

RealVideo is a great codec for Cartoon, XviD will be other option(I choose this), use what your eyes like more ;)

Good luck to you, Sir! I gave up encoding Family Guy...Fox really didn't put much work into the transfer...the quality is a lot worse than Futurama DVDs or even The Simpsons which is not what you'd expect from a cartoon of such recent vintage.

I thought it was an NTSC->PAL problem that made the discs look like crap ... but the new R1 NTSC DVDs looks just as bad.

You'd probably get better results making interlaced SVCDs out of them and watching them on a TV.

yeah i wasn't to impressed with the quality on the Family Guy DVDs.
