Regarding AAC DirectShow and new 3ivx mp4 media splitter

Hi, Nic and whoever else this might concern. I tried to PM you Nic but your message box was full. Anyway, I have been playing around with the 3ivx 4.04 and nic's crappy beta 2 aac directshow filter. Since 3ivx now allows us to connect the pins for the media splitter to a video decoder and audio decoder that aren't theirs I decided to try this: I made a 5.1 aac file and an xvid avi and muxed into a mp4 container, then opened graphedit and connected the pins to ffdshow and nic's aac direct show. Then I tried to play in a ds player, it gave me an error which I expected. I only have a 2 channel sound card and I didn't think your decoder would downmix, I think this is the problem. I guess my question is this; does nic's decoder downmix to 2ch? Because I think if I did have a 5.1 soundcard it would work. :) Anyhow I think this is pretty cool we might actually be able to use 5.1 aac in mp4 now, :) Sorry about such a long message.

Just tried to play an mp4 with a 2ch aac with nic's directshow and it crashes. :( But on the positive side I have got ffdshow working with the media splitter. Possibly, we a little further away from getting 5.1 audio to play in mp4 than I thought.

Nic's filter need a wav header if I'm not wrong.

Yeah, I was hoping that it would work without it. But probably you are right, I'm not sure though if mp4creator will actually mux wav into mp4. But we shall see. :)

Thanks doom9, I don't think those filters support any more than 2 channels though, which isn't better than the ds from 3ivx. I will certainly have a look at it though.

Well, mp4creator will not mux the aac file with the wav header into mp4 so I guess that idea won't work.

Sorry I didnt reply earlier (as I read the thread as soon as you posted it). But I needed time for testing.

the 3ivx filters work perfectly now :) So you can use mp4creator to make an xvid with aac audio into a mp4 file and use the 3ivx filters to play back the file using the 3ivx filters (and the XviD filter to decode the video I suppose) (The 3ivx audio filter plays aac just fine)

(It was fiddily to get mp4creator to work :confused: , I had to work through and change some of the code. But then it muxed the AAC and XviD just fine and played great as a mp4.)

I doubt however that the 3ivx filters play 5.1 aac though. They use the old version of FAAD which I doubt had any support for 5.1. Someone would have to create a dshow from scratch probably using faad2 (but im not even sure that would support 5.1 Id have to check). faad2 is GPL not LGPL like faad so 3ivx won't use it.

I unfortunatly dont have the time to look into and I dont really have the want, as 2channel aac is enough for me for now, and the original 5.1 ac3 is what Id use for 5.1 sound.

Yup, I have it working as well with 2ch audio.

I unfortunatly dont have the time to look into and I dont really have the want, as 2channel aac is enough for me for now, and the original 5.1 ac3 is what Id use for 5.1 sound.

Yup, the original 5.1 ac3 is what I would normally use, I was just doing this for testing purposes. :)

Hm. Didn't think about that yet, but you're right. Transcoding from AC3 doesn't make sense, but from DTS :D

Mmmmmmmm....... 5.1 AAC transcoded from DTS, along with all subtitles, all stored in a Matroska file. That will be nice.
